MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin appeals court has upheld the conviction of a once prominent Jesuit priest on charges that he abused two students during retreats in Wisconsin in the 1960s.

The District 2 Court of Appeals rejected Donald McGuire's claim that the 36-year delay in filing charges against him prejudiced his ability to defend himself.

McGuire was once a spiritual adviser to Mother Teresa and her religious order of nuns, and he has become one of the more prominent religious figures convicted in the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal.

In February, a federal judge sentenced him to 25 years in prison after he was convicted of traveling outside the U.S. and across state lines to have sex with a teenager.
