UW-Parkside teacher training faulted
MADISON — The Department of Public Instruction says UW-Parkside has not been properly educating students to become licensed teachers.
A report released Wednesday says the school’s teacher preparation program has "serious deficiencies" and does not meet many state standards.
The department says UW-Parkside must fix the problems or it will no longer approve the program.
The review says the program has allowed students to do their student teaching without passing required exams or taking necessary courses. The review says some students received credit for independent study courses that did not follow university policies.

biggirl, you seem to have some knowledge of how to best run teacher education programs at colleges and universities. What is wrong with making sure all teaching candidates have basic knowledge of pedagogy, reading instruction, and classroom management? Just because someone has a Phd in mathematics doesn't mean the he or she knows how to teach mathematics to children.

DPI has a bunch of useless rules that have nothing to do with teaching. To just get to one of the major problems, they require so many teaching courses that the students don't come out with enough in the discipline. A Mathematics Ph.D. is seen as unqualified to teach math, for example, because they don't have courses on how to write a fill-in-the-blank test.
