No terrorists in our cells

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin lawmaker wants to keep terrorists out of the state’s prisons.

Rep. Dean Kaufert, a Neenah Republican, is preparing to introduce a bill that would prohibit the state Corrections Department from accepting anyone who was an inmate, prisoner or detainee at Guantanamo Bay unless they’ve violated Wisconsin law.

President Barack Obama has said he plans to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay by January 2010. His plan calls for some detainees to be tried in domestic civilian courts.

Kaufert says he’s concerned detainees could be sent to Wisconsin prisons. He says guards shouldn’t be forced to interact with terrorists.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate have proposed legislation that effectively would block the transfer of any detainees to the United States.

I was speaking figuratively there BostonBilly. Is America made of a bunch of chickens? We can defeat the Japanese, Nazis, Soviets but somehow we are afraid of 20 alleged terrorists? Sad, sad, sad.

I have lots of space in my inbox. Send me the, "about 4000" names that you "know". Maybe I can help.

Yes, I know about 4000 ex-GM employees who would probably be willing to watch 20 alleged terrorists in an empty GM plant that is surrounded by fence and barbed wire. They would even bring their own guns.

We have hundreds of murderers (and worse) in our prisons now. What, exactly, are we afraid of?

darwin, why don't you build a federal prison in your backyard and keep them all! You seem to be in love with these terrorists!

So, the French are willing to take one to France but we aren't. Sounds to me like the people most wanting to press the "war on terror" are the least likely to want to deal with the people they grab. They should be imprisoned in Crawford TX.

I think we should build a federal prison in the back yard of the white house and maybe every governors mansion. Then detain them all there!! It is stupid to want to move them, they are fine right where they are and no harm to anyone! YOu can have them if you want them but I don't want them in my town!!!String them up! That would solve everything.(Sarcasm,in case you didn't get it)

booch11, I'm no fan of passive-aggressive argument. Take it elsewhere.

Didn't we used to have German POWs tending fields during WWII?

This is silly.

1) Are some people really living in daily mortal fear of terrorists?
(Boo!)
2) Terrorists would never end up in a state prison system, as already pointed out.

I have no idea why liberals are opposed to the military tribunals. There is precedent (ex parte Quirin), they were captured extraterratorially during military action, and most importantly... what else are we going to do? Hold them indefinitely? I thought most of the hubbub is that they are _not_ receiving rights, e.g. a fair trial.

We have obviously obtained whatever information we could; let's try 'em and if found guilty, sentence them.

Personally... I'd love to see them on a chain gang, doing productive work *for* a country that they hate.

janesvillean:
according to a nytimes.com story, SOME dems lawmakers said detainees would go to federal prisons (Carl Levin being one). One was not so demonstrative.
Representative Murtha said this, "terrorism suspects would be no more dangerous in a secure Pennsylvania prison than they were in Cuba."
That must make the good people of PA sleep well at night. I'll bet those detainees won't be using the Murtha airport or staying anywhere near his hometown of Johnstown.
btw, curious of your thoughts on Barry O's decision to carry on the Bush doctrine of holding tribunals for some detainees.

There is a place where these “detainees” / terrorists should go, but unfortunately I don’t have control over that. Wisconsin actually has a bit of history regarding “housing” certain undesirables. No, not Capone and his cronies, I’m talking about WW II German and Japanese POW’s. An interesting read for those who may be interested in history is, “Stalag Wisconsin: Inside WWII Prisoner of War Camps” by Betty Cowley.

Boscobel is a state prison not a federal one. The prison in Oxford was built as a state prison but then sold to the Feds. It is considered a medium security institution.

Rep. Kaufert is grandstanding, as janesvillean said these are Federal prisoners. No matter what the state legislature passes it wouldn't affect the placement of the Gitmo prisoners.

There's a town in Montana that has a brand new max security prison. The community chipped in to build it to provide employment for the locals.
They have requested Gitmo detainees as it now sits empty and the town can't get any inmates.

The Republicans are really, really good at opposing things that NOBODY HAS PROPOSED.
.
The only destinations thus far even suggested for Guantanamo detainees are Fort Leavenworth and the federal Supermax facilities such as ADX Florence -- which already houses several terrorists, spies, and others considered dangerous to the commonwealth.
.
It's not clear how "battlefield detainees" would even come under a category that would allow them to be transferred to a state prison system. Or that any state prison system has the facilities necessary.

PLEASE pass this. Cause I don't know how many of you would like another person in our already over crowded jail. And then for that person to be the terrorist. I'm sure you all would love to know that if the terrorist escaped they would be running around in your back yard. Instead of sitting on a remote island in the middle of no where, called Cuba. Go watch National Geographics Explorer on Guantanimo. You will see for your self what its like.
