State's Hispanic population at 5 percent

MILWAUKEE (AP) — New U.S. Census Bureau estimates show a significant growth in Wisconsin's Hispanic population.

The figures released Thursday show the Hispanic population has increased about 48 percent since 2000, to nearly 286,000 people. Hispanics now make up about 5 percent of the state's population.

Darryl Morin is director of the League of United American Citizens of Wisconsin. Morin says it's more than Hispanics bringing their culture to Wisconsin, it's "how they are integrating into the social fabric of the United States."

The growth in the Hispanic population is a significant demographic shift not only in Wisconsin, but across the United States.

I see. The Census Bureau and the Associated Press met to determine the best way to start a flame war on GazetteXtra.com. Mission accomplished!
.
The original is probably this Milwaukee Journal story, which does briefly discuss some other racial classifications, but highlights the most important news found in the data. This was not a report on the Hispanic population, it is a routine updating of all state and county population estimates as the bureau prepared for the 2010 census.

It is news because someone at the Gazette decided it was news. Reports on other races did not come out at the same time as this report. That is why there are no statistics for other races. Let's face it, the only race that really matters is human race. Skin color is just a genetic expression and has nothing to do with a humans ability to care about others, which is what really matters.

totally agree, i am guessing there was no other things they could write about so they thought they would start a war on the forums? Well on the upside the comments really have not been that bad so far.

As this is a population estimate, it is aimed at counting residents, not citizens.
.
Past estimates of legal vs. illegal Hispanic immigration vary widely, but generally about half are assumed to be of illegal origin. A large majority of families are mixed, with some legal and some illegal members. Interestingly, inflows of legal residents have increased, after several years of being outnumbered by undocumented immigrants, and immigration of all types has declined during the current recession.

I think some people need to get a job at the gazette. Then maybe they can have some influence over the articles that get written and posted.Wich would also influence the comments made about those articles. That might take care of those pesky "not necessary" comments, as well as the "sourness".

I do not believe this 5% number for one second. Anyone that does has no common sense.

I, myself, do not understand the point in the article, but it sure has spiked some sourness in some.

How many of the hispanics are LEGAL citizens? Why the question. In reference to the article of Hispanic. Why even ask that question. Like I said start asking how many whites are legal citizens. Fair is Fair.

Probably more than you care to acknowledge thank you. This article is not even necessary, where are the percentage rates for all the other races.

I am hispanic an a legal citizen. Hispanic doen't mean only Mexican. It includes South & Central American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Spanish, too. I am also "white".
pizza- yes it does. Things have not changed so much in this town that racism doesn't occur daily. Beloit is far more diverse than Janesville. I am dark in the summer and light in the winter. I don't look hispanic, but when people hear my name they automatically assume I can speak fluent spanish. I do not. My children can speak spanish because they took many years of it in school; we speak English at home because that is how I was raised.

What is the white %??? I think its ridiculous to post this article or figures. What was the point? How many whites are legal? Just because some one is white, does not make them legal. There is true ignorance from some on here.

"This should draw some comments from Janesburg's white sheet crowd."
C'mon. Just because there were a handful of nuts 20 years ago doesn't mean that is the way Janesville is.
