Former candidate for Wisconsin governor dies in Virginia
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A two-time candidate for governor and one of the state’s most prominent property developers has died.
David Carley died Wednesday morning at his home in Charlottesville, Va., at age 80. His wife Claire Gargelli says memorial services are being planned both in Madison and Charlottesville.
Carley ran unsuccessfully for governor as a Democrat in 1966 and 1978, losing both times in the primary.
Along with his brother Jim, David Carley ran Carley Capital Group, which built large urban projects across the country from the 1960s into the 1980s.
David Carley also served as president of Milwaukee’s Medical College of Wisconsin, was a University of Wisconsin regent and headed the state Department of Resource Development under then-Gov. Gaylord Nelson.
