Rink remodel still a go

The Janesville City Council on Monday reassured Wisconsin Hockey Partners that it would stand by its decision to sink $200,00 into the city’s aged ice arena, despite hearing that a private group hopes to partner with the city and raise money to build a new rink.

A representative of the group said major problems would remain at the ice arena even if the city spends $200,000.

The council in March approved a lease with Wisconsin Hockey Partners and voted to spend the money to build a locker room and expand the concession stand so the group can bring a Junior A hockey team here.

A newly formed building committee of the Janesville Youth Hockey Club, however, recently announced it hopes to partner with the city to raise money to build a new facility.

fixing up your house and fixing the rink are 2 different things. you have to live in the house, sleep eat and live. The rink is an expense that is a fluff thing. most people are finding it hard to pay bills and buy groceries, let alone spending money they don't have to fix up a facility that is hardly used by the majority of people of this community. If you have the money donate it. but don't ask me to pay for your recreation!

because you never use the ice arena doesnt mean a thing, there are people who never drive also, there are also people who never use the parks, and people who never call the police, doesnt mean we should cut those programs...

If we are going to spend to upkeep our amenities, how about dropping $200,000.00 into city potholes, so I can keep driving on the streets of my childhood. I never have and never will use the Ice Arena, but I would like to be able to drive to work and the grocery store without needing a GPS to navigate around some of the city craters.

Does that mean that you won't give me the $200K? $20K would be fine. This is Wisconsin, the land of handouts. LOL
Hey! Lighten up.

Two stories today: one about cuts for over 300,000 in the school budget, another about a continued commitment for over 200,000 for Junior A Hockey. The priorities here are twisted.

tom1cass2 and StaceyU2: The city didn't have any problem letting the Tallman house fall into a terrible state of disrepair. Obviously they haven't maintained the ice arena either. Shame on them.

Is there a plan in place to recover these costs if the Hockey thing fails?

I agree with "tom1cass2".. The city owns the building, they need to keep it up to date, we can not let our houses/property go to shambles with out doing some repairs, why should the city be able to?? The Arena is in need of major repairs, (for those who don't ever go into it, would not even know the half of it).. The Compressor for the ice is such a "realic" that they can not get parts for it anymore,, there is little to no room in the lockerooms, consession area is a joke and beyond, They need to spend money to get them fixed, just like you all need to have money to fix your car, house, or go to the doctor.... do it now before it gets to out of hand.....

With no ice, make the place a roller rink and have roller derby.

Does anybody realize the city has to keep up with the upkeep of the ammenities we have no matter if a hockey team was coming or not the city would still have to fix the problems. We have to maintain the things we have.

Yeah and it will still have problems after they spend the $200,000. guess who is going to have to pay for that??? You got it, all of us tax payers whos houses are worth less than last year!!! How dumb is our city council??!! That is why they won't put this to a vote, they want what they want regardless!

in the janesville city council/school board spend a holic tradition, we have come full circle. an upgrade to a remodel to a new facility. the overburdened taxpayer has been smooched then rolled again. it is such a joke. folks i know just had their home reassesed for refinancing and it is 100 grand less than last years assesment. that my friends is the definition of depression. meanwhile, the janesville powers that be spend money like water. now for those that want to move out of janesville to get away from the insanity, good luck. your home is worth less than what you owe.
