Wisconsin lost record 14,200 jobs in 1Q
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A new federal report says Wisconsin is one of 32 states that lost a record number of jobs in the first three months of the year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics report says Wisconsin companies cut more than 14,200 jobs in the first quarter.
That’s more than twice as many jobs as were lost in the first quarter of 2008. Companies cut about 6,000 jobs then.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also says the number of extended mass layoffs in Wisconsin is up, from 27 in the first quarter of 2008 to 74 in the first quarter of this year. Those are cases in which 50 or more workers lost at least 31 days of work.
Nationwide, a record 559,000 workers lost jobs in the first quarter. Only 27 percent of employers say they expect to recall workers.

The Milwaukee sick leave law that was voted in and which is now in the courts, is going to be a serious problem for any employer to want to be in business in that county.

The lack of job diversification is part of the problem here. Moreover, because we've been so reliant on manufacturing over the last few decades, we aren't in a position to get the tech oriented jobs when the economy recovers. Our only hope is health care, but with so many either without or with lousy insurance even the health care providers have been cutting back.

I think the point here is that Wisconsin is one of numerous states heavily affected by the recession. These aren't jobs that are traveling to other states, they're jobs that have ceased to exist.

Gov. Doyle doesn't help to keep jobs here in Wisconsin. All he is worried about is to raise taxes. What ever happen to the rainy day funds? Did he use it to balance the budget? There is wasteful spending here in Wisconsin, and we the tax payers are paying for it.

We need jobs first and foremost, otherwise who will be able to help pay for health care reform.

We need health care reform. We're a state that would benefit a lot from such reform, as the future for many people in our state is in the health care industry.
