JANESVILLE – The Janesville School Board voted Tuesday to accept Superintendent Karen Schulte’s budget-cutting recommendations.

The board also agreed to most of the new positions Schulte wants to create.

The board delayed a decision on Schulte’s recommendation to hire six new custodians to handle the extra square footage at the newly expanded high schools.

Among the cuts is the job of district athletics director. The high school athletics directors will take over duties now performed by Athletic Director Kevin Porter. The board also extended the hours of the athletics secretaries so they may work during the summer.

Also Tuesday, the board delayed until July a decision on increasing school lunch prices.

I have to disagree with DR. SCHULTE. Does she really know what she is doing? As a parent of a child in athletics I believe we need to keep Mr. Porter. Janesville schools have the heroin issues as the paper states and having a good athletic department with Mr. Porter running in is what we need to help these kids. He is a great guy and is doing a great job. Maybe the citizens of Janesville could vote and eliminate her job! I know she will not be getting my vote next time.

Dr. Schulte, my bad. She was by far and away the best choice for the job. She'll get the job done right and I'm sure some people probably won't like it but that's the way it goes in this town.

The people who don't work directly with Mr Porter, will not realize the impact this decision will make on our high school sports. Kevin is a pleasure to work with, and works hard to make sure our athletics run well. The parents and students both like and respect Kevin and the job that he does. It will be realized too late what a needed assest this job position is.

Bigmike, I may not like her, but it is Dr. Schulte, not Mrs.

When you rocket scientists figure out how to rearrange the budget to keep these positions, please let the school board know. I'm sure they'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

It's called financial responsibility and Mrs. Schulte is doing the best she can with what she has. I'm sure she'd love to have a budget surplus instead of a budget deficit.

jmag, each school has one principal, so where is the redundancy to that. The middle schools with populations of 700 to nearly 1000 students has one asst. principal. The high schools have 3 asst principals, with populations of nearly 1800 kids and one of the assistants is the building AD which was half-time but with the elimination of the district AD will probably be full time.

Now with these facts where is the redundancy and how many of these positions would you suggest the board eliminate/combine as your blog suggests?

I completely disagree with the elimination of Mr. Porter's job! The AD/Assistant Principals at the high school are consumed with their AP end of the job. Our schools have gang issues, discipline issues and so, so much more that takes up the AP job. How are Mr. Phillips and Mr. Lehman going to handle the additional AD duties!

I feel very badly for Mr. Porter, his wife and their children who will more than likely be facing a move!

I was not a fan of Dr. Schulte getting the superintendant job and she's proven to be what I expected.

The gazette probably won't write a follow up to this, just like they annouced the layoffs of six teachers and then never said another word about it, and were not factual...I know for sure the layoffs weren't all in the middle/high school like stated by gazette. Come on before you help to announce the delay in someones future make sure you have the facts strait.

I'm pretty sure Kevin will once again be moving his family to another city. It's happened too often to that family already.

Now the School board should look at how many Principals and Vice Principals they have. They should look at all positions where there is redundancy and eliminate/combine the unneeded positions

Why don't they combine 50% of the positions into one; give the "survivors" twice the responsibilities with no additional financial incentives; offer the students absolute crap for lunch, at an increased price of course; and then wonder why the students are lacking in education. Oh! Never mind. That is what they are doing already. Is Janesville so messed up that they can’t find other ways to cut or balance the budget? Has Janesville done away with the power of the vote? I’m sorry but I think school cuts are just silly. JMO
Good luck Mr. Porter.
