City council approves ice arena alcohol sales

The Janesville City Council on Monday voted 4-3 to give Wisconsin Hockey Partners a license to sell beer at the city-owned ice rink.

The group is bringing a Junior A hockey team to Janesville, and spokesman Bill McCoshen has said since he brought the idea to the council last summer that he needed to sell beer to make the venture financially viable.

Voting to approve the license were Kathy Voskuil, Russ Steeber, Bill Truman and Yuri Rashkin. Voting no were George Brunner, Tom McDonald and Frank Perrotto.

The alcohol license advisory committee had previously recommended on a 3-1 vote that the council OK the license.

The sale of beer has been a sticking point with some community members since the issue first aired in January. Some say alcohol and family entertainment do not mix. But others say it’s no different than serving beer at a Packers or Snappers game, and that beer sales would not turn the ice rink into a corner bar.

truthteller - I wouldn't look at it as a personal attack on you, just on your comment. I cannot respect someone's opinion when that someone is suggesting selling pot. I realize that you were probably being sarcastic, but it is so far out there and ridiculous that it doesn't add to the "ebb and flow" of a conversation here - no way to respond to something that is so absurd.

How did csense personally attack you. Maybe you should also stay on topic as you say. It is about alcohal at the rink. Not POT or at High school games or at the sports complex or at any other sporting event or what ever. This is about the rink. Also if this is not the right time do this? Then when would be the right time.

csense- why do you alway's make personel attacks against me? I wish you would stop this and stay on topic about the discussion. I might not agree with your opinions or the way you bring them across to others but I will respect your right to voice your opinions- I hope you can respect mine as well.

More evidence this city doesn't have its priorities in order.

All of you people who keep comparing this to selling beer at Little League games, Youth Football, and even Dawson Field - you don't get it, the difference being that this is a BUSINESS. It isn't youth sports; it isn't WIAA sanctioned high school sports; it isn't collegiate sports. It is a business. They are in it to give these players experience and exposure, but also to make money.

its all on the agenda,i said when this all started, they would be approved a license.now why is it that other people applying for one are denied?anything that does not benefit the city, county or state, is not on that agenda.now think of all the dui's, the disorderly conducts, and dont forget the drunken disorderlies,(lol, i cant wait to see what mess this shall bring)the money they generate will come from all the tickets and fines they hand out,LOL. have fun down there. oh by the way can you smoke in there?

cruch_munch. Why would the parents throw their empty beer cups at their kids?
JCena- This is not a high school team, Not run by the WIAA.
wdwhacker- doubt it, get over it.
Yep, it happened because Stan pushed for it.
jvldss- That is about the stupidest thing I've heard. Have you ever been to a hockey game and seen people fighting in the stands. DOUBT IT.

Now we don't need to fix the Ice Arena. Just have everyone drink enough beer until they start "seeing" skaters on ice.

Did they approve a boxing ring adjacent to the beer garden so drunk parents and fans have a safe place to duke it out away from the general public.

Stan Milam should be happy. Now he can push it for the Little League park.

let's see how long it takes before they want to sell beer at the hockey camps, tailgate kick off parties and so on. I bet it will not be only during game times.....wait and see!

I think this is definitely something that the ice arena needed to do. It will help to generate some revenue and might even help to increase the ticket sales also. All I have to say is that we need as many types of deals like this to help generate some revenue so maybe someday we can build a bigger and better ice arena. I can bet you there will be 0 cases of alcohol related incidents at the ice arena for the first year they start selling. It's not like a Packers or Brewers game where people are already hammered by the time they get into the game. I think this is a great way to generate some revenue.

All they need now is some ice to play on.

nowaydog - great point. Don't forget the high school athletic events like basketball, football, baseball, etc.

Business is business. There can be rules voted on as to when the beer sale cut off is. And whoever they contract with for the supplier, now you're talking about the posibility of revenue from sponsorship. There is money to be made in sponsorship.

maybe we could start selling beer at the youth complex center when the kids are playing there games, or we should also allow beer at Dawson ballpark, just thinking of other ways to generate money!!

truthteller - once again, your comments are absurd and ignorant, bringing these blogs down in the mud instead of allowing them to be intelligent "discussions."

Wow, there is a surprise! Sell beer to all the contractors that are going to be needed to fix that dump. That should offset the cost a bit.

I bet if we sell pot we could get even more people to come hockey.
