UPDATED: Part of Janesville under a boil-water advisory

By GAZETTE STAFF   Friday, May 8, 2009 - 3:05 p.m.

JANESVILLE – Some east-side Janesville residents are being asked to boil water as a precautionary measure after bacteria were found in a water sample. The advisory will be in effect at least until Saturday afternoon.

The city reports finding fecal coliform/E. coli bacteria in an area of the city that is east of Randall Avenue and north of Mt. Zion Avenue and Black Bridge Road.

The state Department of Natural Resources has required the city to issue a precautionary boil/bottle water advisory for this part of the city, according to a city news release.

“Ice, food, and beverages prepared with this unsafe water must be discarded,” the release states. “You should boil or use commercially bottled water for drinking, food preparation and making ice. If you boil water, the water should be heated to a rolling boil for at least one minute before use. Ice should be made from boiled or bottled water.

The city water utility is increasing chlorine in the system, flushing water mains and doing follow-up testing, according to the release.

City Utility Director Dan Lynch said results of another test of the water will be known Saturday afternoon. If samples come back normal, the advisory will be lifted, Lynch said.

For more information, contact the Janesville Water Utility at 755-3115; Tim Banwell of the Rock County Health Department at 757-5441; or Stephen Ales, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at (608) 275-3311.

To boil, or not to boil: that is the question.
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
the slings and arrows of outrageous
fecal coliform/E. coli bacteria, or
to take arms against a sea of (shinola),

I wonder why my emergency weather radio did not go off for this? There is a setting for boil water warning. Why not use a reverse 911 to notify affected residents even if the county controls 911??? I was on my third glass of water when I logged onto the gazette yesterday at 4:00 and found the article. No wonder we have all felt icky the last couple of days.

My daughter and her 4 children have been so sick they could hardly get out of bed. I'm talking about severe diarrhea and fever. Yesterday my daughter could barely get out of bed from being so week from constant diarrhea. First we thought it was the swine flu because the whole family was effected so quickly! This is just ridiculous that this had to happen!! What can they do now that they all have become effected???

According to The City of Janesville, there has been no change in the status. The 24-hour test results will be available AFTER 1:30 p.m. It will be posted on The Gazette & City website, as well as on WCLO.

I found out about the boil water warning while watching channel 5 news at 6:00 pm last night. I think the city should forget about building bike tunnels and rebuilding the ice arena and get a reverse 911 system where thousands of residents can be alerted at once, also lets get the City Utilities Director a computer and a program so he can see instantly when the last checks were made, all 60 or 70 per month as he says, each one should be on record.

My understanding is the tests actually take 24 hours. Results for the samples collected on May 7 were available May 8 (Friday). The results for the five additional tests taken Friday are expected Saturday afternoon.

I've been paying a ton of attention to this advisory and it seems like I'm the only one who noticed they found the E.Coli in our water on 5/7/09 but we were not notified until 3PM 5/8/09... Just thought some of you might find that interesting, thanks Janesville for being on top of this, or NOT!

Hopefully the children who drank water out of drinking fountains at schools in the affected area today will not get sick. I worked in an eastside school this afternoon and was not told of any E. Coli in the water alert. However, if announcements were not being made until about 3pm, then that makes sense why I was unaware of it at school this afternoon. (In fact, I didn't become aware of this until about 10:30pm, luckily I do not live in an affected area). I just hope no children get sick from drinking water at school throughout the day today.

The city of Janesville website has an area you can sign up for email updates. I got my first email about 3pm today. I went to WalMart at 8pm tonight and they were just removing the lettuce and cilantro from the shelves that were sprayed with their automatic watering system. As a business I thought they should be more aware of the situation.

Interesting that this would happen now. At the last council meeting, Dan made a presentation, recommending a new 7.1 million dollar water tower on the NE side - because the public is at risk of microbes in the water if a main breaks. I don't see anything concerning a water main break. The earlier article on this website states "The city does not have confirmation that the test result is final. The city will conduct five other tests related to the one positive test, and the results will be available Saturday afternoon. Lynch expects those five tests will come back negative, but because there is one indication of E. Coli, the city wants to err on the side of caution."

Don't panic about the E Coli - panic about the 7.1 million dollar water tower bill!

It is bad when I find out this from reading my friend's posts on Facebook! So all day my 4 children under age 9 and I have been drinking this crap. So, we'll keep our fingers crossed and since we are the last house in the city ask our neighbors(who are Harmony Township) if we can get a pitcher of water! LOL No wonder they don't want to be annexed in Starview Heights!!

I just returned from Woodman's where the cashier shared with me that they had to call Pepsi and Coca Cola to get extra shipments of the bottled water they supply... They have three semi's worth of additional water on it's way to the store, and the aisles were being swarmed by people stocking up on tons of water like we were banned from using tap water for weeks!!! I speculate its a conspiracy by the bottled water companies to make some extra money! HA

No but really, I'm glad the city errs on the side of caution, but I figure with all of the coffee I drank today(with potentially contaminated water) and all of the cooking I've done during the last couple of days, if the water IS in fact contaminated, I'm as good as sick by now! Oh well!

I don't listen to the local radio stations because I don't like either one. I usually check this website several times a day but have been busy with a funeral. How about giving leaflets to the mail carriers that deliver in the affected area and putting them in the mail boxes. I can guarantee there are a lot of people that still don't know about this advisory. No excuse for it.

After I heard this on WCLO this afternoon I went to a local grocery store and purchased 4 gallons of water. I like to drink ice water, I dumped the ice from my ice cube trays, washed the 4 containers and found out that to fill them it took over 3/4 of the gallon of water!

Personally, I think the city has been exemplary in how they have responded to what may just be a false positive. Asking for every business and residence to receive a leaflet the SAME DAY that the test results come in is bizarre. The fastest way to get the word out is using the media.
.
Consider ourselves lucky we don't live in Crestwood, Illinois -- where taxes are low, and to save money, the city violated federal law in using a well polluted by dry cleaning chemicals. For TWENTY TWO years.

WCLO and WJVL made regular announcements regarding the boil alert several times an hour between 3pm and 6pm today. As we head into weekend programming, we plan to break into the regular broadcast schedule to deliver updates.

The most significant update will likely be made around 2pm Saturday, when the city expects to receive its test results.

Also look to gazettextra.com and wclo.com for updates over the weekend.

It is absolutely ridiculous that the boil order information has not been sent out to the public in a more informative way. At 4pm, the restaurant we went to for dinner had JUST found out about it. They didn't even have all the details on what they could and couldn't serve. Around 5:30pm, Target was JUST finding out about it and closed their Starbucks and food area. In this world full of communication, there has to be a better way to inform the public of health risks.

I heard about it when I picked up my grandchildren from daycare. The staff has covered all water spigots and had to go to Sentry to buy cases of water for the kids, to drink and to wash their hands. I don't know when the one staff member got a text message about it, but I'm glad he did. He also said there was a huge line of customers buying cases of water. He figured they could easily run out before the store closed.
.
My concern though, how long has the water been contaminated? Does anyone know if this is a daily monitoring thing? Or did people start to get ill and show up for what they thought was the swine flu and it turned out to be "piggy" water...

I'm just curious, has anyone else in this area experienced slow water drainage when doing laundry or taking a shower? Oddly, the past week in my home, I've noticed a VERY slow drain.
Also, I thought my animals got into something because they've been lethargic and vomited a couple times in the house...could it be from the water?
Can't get through on the phone numbers above. Would be nice to have a city email to report these FYI items to in case it was part of the puzzle.
