JANESVILLE Investigators remain at the scene of a suspicious house fire that was reported early today.

The fire that did extensive damage to the house at 121 Clark St. started on the front porch and exterior of the house.

“It is suspicious and under investigation by Janesville Fire Department Fire Marshal Larry Hainstock and Janesville Police Department Detective Mark Johnson, who were still on scene at 8:30 a.m. today, said Scott Morovits, fire department shift commander.

Some firefighters also remained on scene to help with the investigation, water down hot spots and to pick up equipment, Morovits said.

Times are tough for so many people, this is probably going to be an increasing trend once people get even more desperate. Sad!

One of my sisters lives in Minnesota and a neighbor of hers was upset about losing her mobile home. The night before it was going to be taken over, the neighbor went in and started the place on fire. This could have been a total random act of arson by any individual, but my guess would be the former owners decided to "put one to the bank".

The difference is the insurance value. It is likely much larger than the loss of the loan.

I agree that the bank didn't go through the trouble of starting the fire, but if it is a bank selling the property they have either completed the foreclosure or the owners signed the property back to the bank. And now that the property had this fire the bank will most likely be taking a loss as the values of homes are in rough shape all ready much less one that has fire damage.

It was for sale by a bank. I doubt the bank went to the trouble of arson -- they have many more options, including cancelling the foreclosure and writing off the entire loan as a loss.

The house is for sale. Maybe they watched CBS evening news about people torching their property to claim the insurance. Times are tough!
