MADISON, Wis. (AP) — There’s a free event that allows people to watch the same nature show that dinosaurs might have watched more than 150 million years ago.

It’s the spring spawning run of the ancient lake sturgeon along the Wolf and Embarrass rivers. Ron Bruch is a Department of Natural Resources sturgeon biologist. He says the run generally starts in mid-April as the waters warm.

It brings thousands of fish-watchers to the shores to see the prehistoric sturgeon in the shallow waters. Some fish weigh up to 200 pounds.

The Lake Winnebago system has the world’s largest naturally reproducing lake sturgeon population. The spawning and viewing locations are the Wolf River Sturgeon Trail near New London, Bamboo Bend at Shiocton and Shawano Dam in Shawano.

Fugly, Yes

Beautiful, Yes

This fish has survived the most drastic changes of climate and environment this world has ever seen.
