Spacesaver makes layoffs

FORT ATKINSON—The economic downturn has forced a “significant” number of layoffs at Spacesaver Corp. in Fort Atkinson.

Leah Elsen, Spacesaver’s vice president of human resources, would not say how many of the company’s 535 workers had been laid off.

The cuts, she said were permanent for some workers in indirect office positions. They are temporary for other direct laborers, she said, adding that still other workers have been transferred to other department or shifts.

Elsen said Spacesaver is optimistic it will be able to call the laid-off workers back, but she wouldn’t provide a timeline.

Spacesaver manufactures high-density mobile storage systems for government, public safety, healthcare and other business operations.

The only thing nice about the new job center website is they list the companies that put the ad on their site. That way I don't waste my time clicking on an ad from an employment agency. Other than that, it's pretty bad compaired to the one they just switched from.

i work for a company that is #1 in the partition wall industry. we are in the process of renewing our contract. it appears that the company is playing hardball, because of the economy. this coming off back to back years of record number profits. and after we accepted a wage freeze to help boost a new product line. where does the ethic line fall here.

My hubby works there and i am so glad he wasn't one of the ones that got laid off. He isn't on the line. I sure hope that they aren't laid off for long. Spacesaver is a great company to work for and they try to take care of there employees as best as they can.

It is my understanding that Fairbanks in Beloit has not laid off any workers and has even hired a few.

It sounds like approximately 100 people were let go, with half of those being positions permanently cut.

I'm currious about something. Is there any manufacturing facility that is either hiring or at least keeping there work forces the same?
It seems like we have heard from every factory in the area, doing some type of layoff.
