Rock River flooding
The Rock River is starting to flood in southern Wisconsin. The National Weather Services reports 1 to 2 inches of rain have fallen across southeastern Wisconsin since Monday evening.
As of Tuesday morning, the Rock was just below flood stage at Fort Atkinson and expected to rise to a foot above flood stage by Friday morning.
At Newville, the river was half-a-foot above flood stage and expected to rise another six or seven inches by March 31.
At Afton, the Rock rose sharply all day Tuesday. It was at 10.36 feet Tuesday afternoon. Flood stage there is 9 feet. It’s expected to rise to 11 feet before cresting on Saturday.
J.J. Wood is a meteorologist in the weather service’s Sullivan office. He says the weather service hasn’t heard of any damage so far.
More rain is in the forecast for southern Wisconsin on Tuesday night.

lisa7- I do believe SwissChick meant "headline" not "heading". Sheesh! Some people should proofread before they post telling others to proofread!

I don't really worry about what the paper has to say or what they mess up. It is more fun to read the comments on here and on craigs list rants and raves. Who needs comedy central.

Again I rest my case very angry people, it is raining it will flood and since when has predicting the weather been 100% accurate. One more thing and I'll see if I can stir up trouble somewhere else. When they (the NWS) predicted this would be a wet week on last Friday, the river was already on its way up. Any more rainfalls, even small amounts, would only raise the river. (As the ground isn't totally thawed out from winter). Sheesh!

Holy cow folks! I just meant to have a little fun through this crappy weather. It was apparently taken as though I was just as serious as the spelling police.

Sorry Mr. Angus, I was actually responding to the National Weather Service regarding the article. I do know that is where the information came from and I apologize to Ms. Iserda if she thought the comment was against her. It wasn't.

thank you for the offer to help yes just drive down the road and there is always someone that needs help.Although dont sit in the middle of the road just to look at how high the water is that just makes it harder for us to get to and from our homes. I think I can speak for everyone in this situation thank you for the offer it is greatly appreciated. There are alot of elderly folks that live on the water that can always use some kind of help.

Really, guess alot of people have cabin fever or something. Last year there should have been thousands more helping their neighbors out with this flooding. -Moving-?? Thats really not an option for most.

if all of you people are so concerned about the people living on the river why dont you volunteer to help instead of leaving your stupid comments about something you know nothing about. So someone made a mistake on their wording, WHO CARES...OPTIMISM; yes I did take offense to that comment on us moving out of our homes it was not only heartless it was down right stupid. We pay taxes and mortgages just like everyone else, probably more!!! Taxes that is I didnt want you to misconstrue that. We knew what we were getting into when we chose to buy property on the river , and certainly are not asking for any special favors!!!!

I would like to applaud Scott Angus. He defended a coworker for simply doing their job. They reported what the national weather service said. The national weather service makes mistakes every day. Don't bash someone for doing what they were asked to do as a part of there job; since they still have one.

Noah is on his way to teach us all how to build an arc! ABSOLUTELY no offense meant here, so please don't take any, but I wish those that live on the river would have just moved away. This is going to be just devistating to see again. Good luck to all!

Perhaps sand bagging would be a better idea than the mud flung. Then again even the Gazette admitted their opps while the spelling police can't get off their high horse.

Rep_of_1, If I may, somewhere is one word, as is runoff. And surly is how you would describe a pirate. But of course, you meant "surely." As Lisa said, let's try and sling mud without making ourselves look foolish.

Is it raining? I hadn't noticed. If you are going to criticize something or someone, you should make sure you don't look like a defensive idiot in the process. Perhaps we all should lower our standards.

Lisa7: look out your window. It's called rain. The rain has to go some where. It's called run off. If you were able to proofread with such clarity, how did you miss such a basic concept?
We all make mistakes in spelling, punctuation and grammar. These are common mistakes. What makes this article different is the lack of common sense seen in the article prior. Surly you can comprehend this with out becoming defensive.

Apparently no one has taken any sort of weather-related courses (i.e. meteorology). If you had any sort of education, you would understand the concepts of Mother Nature.

I can do the Vulcan salute with both hands! In regard to the previous article, I thought is was clear that the river could rise or not, depending on the amount of water that came down. I was on my way to work this morning thinking that it would rise after reading the article, and seeing how much if was raining.

Wow! It's incredible anyone has the where-with-all to even TRY to predict the flooding conditions! If this were possible, I believe a lot of damage could have been avoided LAST year!
I pass through Newville twice a day, every day. The water is already edging up the parking lot at Anchor Inn. Two homes on the North side of the bridge/river which were raised at their foundations this year, are not far from flooding once again. If it rises another foot, they'll have the same mess they had last spring!
Check out the latest news about Fargo. The Red River is at twice its flood level! They have filled 2 million sand bags and the potential is there to top the worst year of flooding they've ever had... 1997 I think.
The DNR needs to set some precedents, and make some decisions as to how to reduce private property damage, especially with the economy in the toilet!

OK folks, settle down. We print dozens of stories and headlines in print and online every day. Not every one of them is as good as we'd like them to be, but we have more work to do and deadlines to meet.
The issue here is how much rain. A little bit of rain, and not a lot of flooding. A lot of rain, and the situation changes. That's what Idzerda wrote yesterday, and she based the story on an interview with a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sullivan. The headline could have better described the situation and prospects, but that's water over the dam - so to speak.
The situation is very fluid - OK, no more puns - so things are tough to nail down. but we'll keep trying.

"Rain not expected to raise Rock River" was a headling from yesterday. Rain has been in the forecast for this entire week from last Friday. Hmm. . . okay. (Mental head slap).
