Beloit names superintendent finalists
From the WCLO newsroom:
The Beloit School Board has chosen three finalists for the job of superintendent.
Steve McNeal currently serves as Executive Director of Educational Programs for the Beloit School District. Before that he worked as a high school principal at Badger High School in the Lake Geneva district and in the Brodhead district for 11 years.
Dr. Barbara Thompson is currently superintendent of the New Glarus School District. Prior to that job, she served as a principal in the Madison School District and has teaching experience going back to 1976.
Milton Thompson currently works in the Kenosha Unified School District as Director of Title One, bilingual, summer school, and P5 programs. He was a principal before that, all in the Kenosha District.
The school board has now set up three more listening sessions for staff and the community before making their final decision. The forums will be held in the Elizabeth Reinholz Theater Tuesday, Wednesday, and next Monday. Staff only forums start at 3:30 and the community is then invited beginning at 4:45 each day.

Comment to BadgerRocksNow: The problem is that there is a whole world of difference between the dynamics of Beloit & the dynamics of Badger. We are very poor & have basically hit rock bottom on truancy & test scores. We are facing a four million dollar budget cut for next year & not many people would be willing to take that on. I still stand firm on Mr. McNeal to be the right choice for us. You would have to see our school situation to understand. I don't think that we are on the same plane.

Comment to Dannyelle: That's what we at Badger thought the first year too. It turned out quite the opposite. Most of the teachers who were the most miserable were our top notch master teachers who did not jump on the bandwagons. Disagree and a world of trouble would come one's way. As for statistics, I'd ask for the actual data on those numbers. Everybody knows statistics lie. Additionally, when teachers feel pressed not to fail students and to accept late work even after school is out, you do tend to see a sharp decline in failure rates.

Interesting comment about Steve McNeal. I currently work for him & I think he is awesome. If you work hard & do your job there isn't a problem. The employees that I see complaining about him are clearly not doing their jobs. As a taxpayer I have a problem with those people who are slackers...& we have a boatload of those. Mr. McNeal is at the top of my list of people I admire. I hope that he is our next superintendent!!

It's shameful that the School Board is rushing through the process of hiring a new superintendent right before the election. They are doing so despite many protests from teachers parents, administrators, and the community. Once again, they turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to all but their own desires. Common sense would dictate that they would let the new board choose a new superintendent. (Especially after the current board worked so poorly with the former superintendent.)It's a matter of a few weeks difference (if they would sensibly wait) and the current board has clearly shown their personal interests supersede what is in the best interest of the district and its students.

Steve McNeal is the same way. It's my way or the highway. The day he left Badger a black cloud was lifted. Beloitalum: He will not listen to anyone. When he is appointed I wish GOOD LUCK to all the people in Beloit.

Beloit needs someone that will LISTEN to the staff, administrators, citizens, etc. Our last superintendent lacked that skill.

My understand from the people I know in New Glarus (I grew up in the general area and have friends and relatives there) is that she tends to me a "my way or the highway" kind of woman. A district should always be careful of the recommendations from another district. If they want to get rid of an administrator, they will give glowing recommendations. I would questions they Average Joe on the street in N.G. to see what is really up.

Beloit, not Beloit Turner. For the record there's nothing wrong with applying for more than one job at the same time.

She was one of the finalist when McCarthy was named sup. though...I'm almost positive. Just wonder why she's shopping this area so heavy - it should be a pointed question in her interview - what might the folks in New Glarus have to say about it? Nobody wants a resume builder at the expense of kids, but if she's authentic, then great.

I don't know about Milton and Beloit Turner, but it is the same Barbara Thompson that was considered for Janesville.

Hmmmm....same Barbara that Janesville saw last weekend? Same one on the finalist list for Milton and Beloit Turner too? Or is it just a common name?
