JANESVILLE -- Karen Z. Schulte has been selected to be the next Janesville public schools superintendent.

The Janesville School Board voted unanimously tonight to offer Schulte the job.

The board and two committees interviewed three finalists today for the position.

The candidates included:

  • Robert F. Jones, superintendent of the COOR Intermediate School District in Michigan.

  • Barbara Williams Thompson, superintendent of the New Glarus School District.

  • And Schulte, the current interim superintendent in Janesville.

The board has been pleased with Schulte’s performance since she became interim superintendent after longtime Superintendent Tom Evert resigned unexpectedly in February.

Schulte began meeting with staff at all the schools in search of ideas to save money.

She began recording weekly video messages to staff. The videos are posted on the district Web site.

She also changed the district’s budget process, offering several possible budget cuts before making her recommendations.

Schulte became director of student services in Janesville in 2004. She continues to hold that title while being interim superintendent.

It's clear that Schulte took the interim job opportunity and ran with it. That had to impress the board. I believe we had three fine candidates for this job and it's terrific that we had competitive talent to hire internally.

This was a no brainer, congratulations.. Get the school district back in shape. Mr Severson you should not have given the other candidates fasle hope. I think a shake up of the borad is required.

The Mike D'Angelo fiasco years ago has made the district rightfully leery of hiring from the outside. I hope this works out for the best for Janesville.

This is the best news this district could receive as she is IMO one great asset to the district and so was her husband Steve. He was surely missed when he left.
