MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Chicago couple is accused of posing as destitute Kenyan refugees and scamming Carmelite nuns in Pewaukee out of more than $800,000.

An FBI affidavit says the married couple first visited the Pewaukee monastery in December 2004 and told the nuns they were brother and sister, homeless and would be killed if they were deported to Kenya.

The document says Angela Martin-Mulu and Edward Bosire told the nuns they needed money for food, rent and other living expenses. The nuns gave them cash and checks over a three-year period.

Sister Mary Agnes says the money came from the nuns' health fund. She says they don't have health insurance because it's too expensive. Agnes won't say how much of the fund was depleted.

The two are in custody in Chicago.

Purrmaid:

;~)

I haven't seen that movie.

--------------

latinmami1, the interesting thing about the damage to the nuns' health care is that the Church fought for centuries against the medical advancements that make that health care the valuble thing it is.

Nuns can request a particular name, but ultimately they are given a name. It may or may not be the name they requested. I know this for a fact as I attended twelve years of Catholic schooling. And I have the chalkboard eraser scars to prove it! LOL

Ummm....nuns do not 'make' money. Being a nun is a life choice not a job. They get money from the Vatican or wherever that is for their food, health expenses, and so on. I don't know this place they live but alot of nuns run businesses, such as St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home here in town. It is run by traditional nuns. That is how they make their money. They have a job just like everyone else. As for the names, yes when you marry God you get a new name. I belive they choose the name they want or it is given to them. I don't remember. So someone can be born, Julie Smith and when she marries God she is Sister Mary Denise, or Mother Mary Julie. I don't know the difference between a Sister and a Mother. I don't know if they go through more religious 'things' or what. Hope it helps a little.

And everyone wonders why we are so cynical nowadays... Scams are every where and (almost) no one trust others anymore.

Angela and Edward are names you could easily find in Kenya, an English-speaking country that was formerly part of the British Empire. In fact they are legal Kenyan immigrants.

.
The large sums seem to be related to medical expenses they claimed. Interestingly, even the order's church organist tried to warn them, and says they were "decent" but "naive".
.
I'm a little surprised they didn't have a more professional charity manager who could have done some checking up. As it is, they did finally realize they were being taken for a ride.

Faith had nothing to do with this, it's called being charitable and helping someone who appeared to be in need. Could have happened to anyone wanting to be charitable, religious or not. Yet another pot shot at religion by justsaynotomath with no merit to it at all.

And better yet, there are more than enough health insurance companies out there (be it a group or individual policy) that could have provided appropriate coverage for these nuns that would have cost a heck of a lot less than the $800,000, that was used to cover the living expenses of only TWO people over the course of 3 years! What the H***! Makes me wonder if Angie, Ed and Sister Agnes weren't in on this scam together!

Have you ever heard of natives from Kenya with the first name of Angie and Bob!!!!? This isn't rocket science Sister Agnes! And why in the heck won't you tell us how much of the fund was depleted? I think there's more to this story than meets the eye?

The nuns need a financial manager. The perps should have to make full restitution. Seems like they could make a lot of money in sales (my apologies to professional salepeople).
Or, possibly politics...create a phoney "crisis" so you can come to the rescue with a ill-conceived, rushed through rescue plan. No, that could never happen.

It amazes me how deceitful people can be for their benefit. It's very sad.

How much do nuns make anyways? Wow, to give away $800,000 in 3 years time. Maybe with the high unemployment rate people should be looking into this. They would be getting paid well obviously & doing good things for people.

How low will "they" go? that is almost as low as being under a pregnant snake. people like this need to be sent back to their Kenya and let them deal with the end result. This is really sad. I'll donate $20 for the plane ticket..........Oh wait.....we could use some of the stimulas money to do that. Everyone .....STAY SAFE!!!!! spelling don't count cause I just woke up

This is just sad that people have the nerve to take advantage of those who will always be faithful to other human beings.
