GOP lawmakers decry agency response to glitch
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican state lawmakers are demanding that the state Department of Health Services notify 5,000 people who were wrongly told their Social Security benefits were going to be cut.
The letter was sent in error earlier this month following a computer glitch. No one will actually lose any money.
But the department decided against sending a followup letter telling people not to worry. Instead it notified county service agencies and is telling concerned citizens about it only if they call to complain.
Sen. Robert Cowles, R-Green Bay, says the department should send a letter to those affected. By not doing that Rep. Robin Vos, R-Racine, says the state is saying it doesn't care about the problem.

janesvillian: It is the way both parties would react. Democrates are just as adept at grasping at any straw that puts the other party in a bad light. And that you cannot deny!

Crooks? It says their benefits are NOT going to be cut. The only question is whether a letter should be sent correcting a mistake in a previous letter. I think the Republicans are really grasping at straws here to get worked up over. But that's pretty much the way they decide what to do on a daily basis anymore.

You’re both entirely right, the state should act to correct its mistake, not wait for people to start screaming.
.
The question is, why is it only the Republicans who are up in arms. I would think that anyone who has constituents – namely every last lawmaker – would be pinging DHS to fix things immediately. Are the Dems snoozing, or does inertia suit them?

How silly for them to not notify the affected people. Those that rely on this money for their source of survival have rather limited resources, including and especially resources.
People with money tend to never want to put the shoe on their foot when it comes to financial resources.
This lack of action disgusts me!

If the original mistake was communicated via a letter, then it only makes sense to send a letter of correction. "Telling concerned citizens about it only if they call to complain" is not good enough.
