Wagoner not 'overly optimistic' about Janesville plant

General Motors chairman Rick Wagoner told reporters today the automaker has no plans to reopen the Janesville plant.

The Janesville community should not be “overly optimistic” about the plant reopening, according to a recording of Wagoner’s remarks to reporters at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor in Washington, D.C.

A local task force working since last summer to retain a GM product at the plant met with GM officials twice in Michigan to pitch an offer. Wagoner acknowledged the task force’s work.

“(We) received tremendous offers from the local union and state and local government on what they could do to support a retooling, which we greatly appreciate,” he said.

But the fact is, the industry has weakened and there isn’t demand for that sort of production capacity, he said.

“As we sit here today, as much as I’d like to say, ‘Yeah, we are going to do that,’ that’s not what we’re looking at,” he said.

While hope springs eternal, Wagoner said GM leaders have “told our friends at Janesville” that the company doesn’t have any promises, and the baseline is “we’re going to have to ramp down.”

“If things change, the fact (is,) it’s been a good plan, good working relationship (with Janesville) and great community support would be something that would weigh in if opportunities present themselves in the future, but probably not fair to be overly optimistic,” he said.

Wagoner addressed the future of the Janesville building, but gave no definite plans.

He said GM has consistently worked with local communities during previous plant closures.

He said “there’s no reason not to sell it,” and in many cases the company puts some money into the building to help redevelop and increase the chances of the site being usable and valuated to the community.

Has anyone else heard that Oshkosh Truck was looking at the plant for military vehicle production?

even if they reopen the plant and make trains. what makes you think that just former GM workers will be hired?? other people just as qualified to get hired..

Yes, until Wisconsin becomes a right-to-work state, we won't be attracting big non-union businesses.

Honda and Toyota would have to have non - union guarantees to even think about putting production in Janesville.

chelle - GM didn't ask for that road. It is documented they didn't want the "golden road to nowhere". Gary Giles (previous plant manager) was on record as saying it wasn't a GM request they get the access road.

Before GM got one penny of taxpayer money Rick Wagoner should have been forced out by President Obama. I don't think it's too late for the taxpayers to demand that he step down especially when GM is asking for MORE money.

I do believe that GM announcing it has no plans to reopen the plant is better than them saying they might or will then backing out and leaving the community out to dry. I also think GM should have to repay the city, county, and state for the money that was used to build the access they wanted. That money could be used for housing, food, clothing, etc. for the homeless and unemployed in Rock County.

Even before this announcement, such as it is, there isn't much optimism in Janesville or Rock County.

I doubt anyone will buy the GM property unless a LOT of "Free Federal Money" (or "Free State Money", if someone bribes Doyle with a big enough campaign contribution) is spent to clean up the buildings and land to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards. You have a century of chemical waste and poisonous metal contamination to deal with at that location. Think of the spilled solvents and cleaners, particles settling from lead-based paints, residues from welding , asbestos, mercury, chromium and zinc compounds, etc., that were not adequately cleaned up over the decades.
.
That is why you see a lot of vacant commercial property just rotting. It's far cheaper to pay the property taxes for decades (or shuffle all the money they can out of the corporation and file for bankruptcy) than to pay the costs of ridding the buildings and land beneath them of toxic wastes. Businesses, involving chemicals, such as metal plating or dry-cleaning are prime examples. The communities not collecting taxes on the property don't want to foreclose on it because then the cleanup might become their burden.

I don't know what will be done with the building.. but I can tell you it is pretty bad shape and will take alot of work to make it safe enough for a community center or anything like that.
I am curious to see what they do with it.

The spelling part normally is no big deal (to me), especially relatively minor errors in a blogging session....but under the circumstances (calling others out on their spelling errors).....how come no one called TheJoker out on "sarcasam"? Or was it more sarcasm, Joker?

I find it very funny that people actually thought my comments on March 6th and other comments about GM coming back due to the work of Mike Sheridan, etc were actually serious! Are you kidding me? You are more clueless than I thought! I suggest you get a dictionary and look up the words: "joke, sarcasam, and attempt at humor". Then you may get a better understanding of what I was saying.

ljs, I looked in my dictionary but could not find the word "tetter-totter". You might want to learn how to spell.

And good old local boy, I think deep down you really like me. You seem to cyber stalk me and then quickly chime in with some silly comment. Sorry, but I already have plenty of girlfriends.

Well, I am off to contribute to the local economy and celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Erin Go Bragh!

Here is TheJokers' comments from March 6th:

Why all the doom and gloom? I am confident that our local leaders and Gov. Doyle are bringing back GM. They are still in discussions, correct? That is what they and the Gazette are saying. Right? Based on this, I now believe GM is coming back. Why is everyone else so doubtful?

You are like a tetter-totter. Back and Forth yet going no where.

Gas will soon be under a buck a gallon, every United States citizen will want a GM Tahoe or Suburban and the Janesville plant will reopen employing over 7,000 workers to meet the pent up demand. Rock county property values will skyrocket as thousands move to Rock county to fill the new jobs in the booming auto industry.
