Slow, no-wake restriction imposed on Rock River

JANESVILLE—The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has issued a slow, no-wake restriction for the Rock River in the city of Janesville, Janesville and Fulton Townships.

Janesville and area boat launches, on the river, remain open but this restriction will be posted at river launches, including Traxler and Riverside Parks.

Slow, no-wake is the minimum speed a motorized watercraft can travel while still maintaining steerage. The Rock County Sheriff’s Office will enforce this speed restriction. If you witness a slow, no-wake violation, call the sheriff’s office at (608) 757-2244.

The concern is that boat wakes will cause shoreline and personal property damage to areas of the river that have exceeded their banks, according to press releases from the City of Janesville and sheriff’s office.

Barnech, you are absolutely correct. I also live on the river and in the past few years I have only seen the Sheriff patrol once during no wake restrictions. I try to flag down violators and tell them about the no wake; half of them are polite and slow down, but half of them ignore me or give me the one finger salute. We need more enforcement.

I agree with the slow-no wake, however, as high as the river is there should be no boats allowed on the river. We live up river and fishing boats do not abide by the slow no wake. When we notice the Sherriff Dept, they ask you to get a boat license. It’s hard to get the license when they are screaming by to get to their fishing holes. When we have tried to give the boaters the thumbs down, meaning slow down, they either ignore you or give you the not so polite finger gesture. The water is extremely high and the boaters should respect river front property owners, however, it has not happened over the past years. If boats are going to be allowed on the river, I would like to see the Sherriff boat on the river to enforce the slow no wake, and this has not been done.

So please, Sherriff Dept, monitor the river during the slow no wake period.
