MADISON, Wis. (AP) — University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers are praising President Barack Obama for lifting restrictions on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research.

Researchers say the move will allow them to compete for more funding as they search for cures to some of the most debilitating diseases.

More than 30 research groups with a total of 80 scientists study human embryonic stem cells at UW-Madison. It has been a leader in the field since scientist James Thomson became the first to isolate them in 1998.

Thomson and some of his UW colleagues were at the White House as Obama signed the order.

Gov. Jim Doyle says Wisconsin researchers "are at the ground floor of a field of discovery that represents tremendous promise to improve and save lives."

Whoanellie...like sending 900 million to Gaza strip? Going against Israel? Sending our tax money out of the country to fund abortions? Using our tax dollars on stem cell research? I'm glad Texas is as big as it is...cause if they leave the union...I'm out of here! I'm thinking we are going to need to hang on to more than our hats.

I'm with kiowamohican, all you hear from the secular news media is that Bush restricted research and funding on this. That is a lie because Bush never resticted research on this, all he did was say federal money couldn't go toward it! They still had different state funding and lots of private funding. All to no avail as it hasn't worked so far! What a waste of my tax dollars. I am morally apposed to this in the first place and now I am paying for it with my tax dollars! What else can this stupid administration throw money at??? I think we will be surprised!!Hold onto your hat!

JustDeaf: Nice try. We still have the First Amendment, and I intend to use it. Btw, how can you "listen" to anything with that moniker?

"Now the scientists will be free to decide themselves what potential their research has."
-
This has always been the case. The only thing your "C" average business major did was restrict govt funding. The private sector has been open to explore all they wanted in this area and decided against it; finding adult stem cell research at this time proved more beneficial.

Finally. For eight years scientific decisions were being made by a C average business major. Now the scientists will be free to decide themselves what potential their research has.
.
The idea that we can decide in advance what research will be successful is so preposterous I don't know where to start.

As I understand this, embryonic stem cell research was never banned under Bush, just no federal funding was allowed.
.
So basically all this will do is throw millions of federal $$'s at something else in earmarks, and pile up even larger debt. What else is new?

Do we want to try to find ways to eliminate disease and suffering or do we want the same old same old?
Control the methods; control the spending, but let the people of science find some possible solutions. JMO

Hey...I'm 100% against the Iraq invasion. That didn't make any difference to the goverment so why should they listen to you?

I'm all for "lifting restrictions".
I'm 100% AGAINST "federal funding".
If stem cells have the potential many believe, universities will compete for accolades in making the first discoveries, WITHOUT more tax money. The universities, of all places, have waaaaaay too much money laying around, particularly in their huge endowment funds.

Do we have any more rat holes to waste taxpayer money on? The reason private company's won't spend much money on this is because the risk is greater than financial gain.

Private funds already fund research on new lines created after 2001. State tax dollars already fund this research as well. Now that the federal government will use my tax money to do something I morally oppose, those private donars can find a new cause to beat their drums about.

More state-sanctioned hype..."Embryonic" stem cells have yet to show any promise anywhere at all, and there are no indications that it ever will, but hey, it transfers money from one entity to another so it must be good.
.
The real downside to this is that its going to waste hours of research that could have otherwise been used to actually find cures.
