MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin voters who have not voted for at least four years have two weeks to respond to a notice sent to them last month by the state Government Accountability Board or they will be declared inactive.

The postcard was mailed to more than 313,000 Wisconsinites last month and tells then that if they want to be retained as active voters, they must respond to the agency by March 23. Voters who do not respond will be classified as inactive, which means, they will no longer be included on poll lists.

Elections Division Administrator Nat Robinson says the mailing includes a tear-off return postcard that contains an application that voters must sign and date. Voters who have changed their name or address in the last four years must re-register.

That would be a really grave situation.

Not to mention all the wasted postage on Obama-land - whoops, I mean Chicago-land - addressed to cemetary plots.

Good thing we're not Illinois residents. The postage for multiple mailings would bankrupt us.

BeenThereDoneThat: Thanks, that makes a little more sense.

County and municipal clerks have purged voters after inconsistent periods and standards in the past. This is, I believe, simply the first time it's being done by the state, as part of HAVA.

Can't wait to see the uproar in 2010. How many will claim they were not informed that they were removed from the voter list? Wonder which party will scream the loudest!

Superdave -- they had well over 2 weeks to respond. The postcards were mailed in February and they have until March 23rd to respond. The article should say "two more weeks"...they actually had about a month to respond.

This is long overdue, but why give them only two weeks?
