UPDATE: Gas leak reported in Janesville
JANESVILLE -- People have returned to their homes and traffic flow has returned to normal after a gas leak this afternoon at Oakhill Avenue and Ravine Street, a Janesville fire official said.
A man digging a hole at 338 N. Oakhill Ave. struck a gas line at 3:01 p.m., causing gas to spill, Janesville Fire Capt. Jody Stowers said.
The intersection of Ravine Street and Oakhill Avenue was temporarily closed as a precaution, he said.
Eight homes nearby were evacuated, Stowers said.
Alliant Energy officials remain at the home to repair the gas line, he said.
No one was injured.

He did call Diggershotline. I responded to the site. He was putting in fence posts. Several companies respond when you call. He either didn't wait until the proper dig time, the dig ticket expired, or the company that marks Alliant's infrastructure didn't mark the service.

So if it was an auger, what the heck was he "fishing" for?

I wonder what he was using to dig the hole. The ground is still frozen if you dig deep enough to hit a gas line.
