More file taxes early, online

MADISON — More Wisconsin residents are filing their taxes earlier this year, and most are doing it online.

The Department of Revenue says nearly 1.1 million residents filed tax returns through the end of February. That’s up from 1.03 million at the same time last year.

More than 95 percent of the filers have done so online, which, the department says, is the most accurate way to file and the quickest way to get refunds.

The department says refunds can come as quickly as five business days for e-filers. So far this year, refunds are averaging $667.

janesvillean: You're not borrowing your own money exactly. You're borrowing from the tax preparer, with a pledge of your refund payment as "collateral". I agree that's it's not a good deal, but caveat emptor.
theone: have a cup of coffee and a Marlboro and relax. :O)

You know, maybe if these places like HR Block, Liberty Tax, etc. didn't charge so much for doing taxes, we wouldn't have to worry about doing it online.

To those that don't file on time, relax. Obama still has vacancies to fill.

"You are also probably eligible for free filing, YOU JUST DON'T KNOW IT." (Caps mine)

That's a pretty pretentious statement. What makes you believe you are more aware of what I know or do not know, janesvillian?

They do, uh, check for duplicate social security numbers ...
.
My main advice here: NEVER EVER use the "refund anticipation loan" that anyone offers. The interest rates to borrow your own money for a few weeks are outrageous, even when you use a legitimate service like H&R Block. Trust me, I used to work for an outfit that did these, and it was responsible for 2/3 of their income. If you want your refund fast, e-file and have the money direct deposited.
