EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — A Rhinelander teen who helped another hunter retrieve a buck is the newest recipient of the state Hunter Ethics Award.

The Department of Natural Resources and La Crosse Tribune sponsor the award started in 1997 to focus on good news about hunters.

The DNR says 18-year-old Nick Owens helped a young woman find a 17-point buck that weighed 200 pounds after she shot it in Burnett County. Owens saw the woman crying outside her truck. She had called her boyfriend, and he didn’t believe that she had shot a big buck.

The DNR says Owens spent two hours retrieving the buck. He will receive his award at the August Natural Resources Board meeting in Hayward.

12dreams-It's pretty pathetic that you can't set aside your opinion of hunting and make such a stupid, one-sided comment only to try and take something so great away from this young man. Would you rather he be out getting into trouble like so many of the other stories we have to read each day? Although after reading some of your other posts, your intelligent level is very evident. Go hug someone. Maybe in your case, a tree.

Lost_city, I hear you loud and clear! Anyways, all good hunters have done this time and time again. We would all like a hand when we get into less than ideal situations. It is always good Karma to help anyone who needs assistance.

Hunting is not unethical if you eat what you kill. Hunting for just sport is unethical. That is why I shoot mostly clay pigeons anymore. I won't be able to eat a full deer in a year. So I stopped deer hunting.

As I read it, an 18 year old man helping a young woman who is upset with her boyfriend, he was not spending two hours looking to find a "buck" he was looking for something else..

How did I know some tree-hugger would come in here and say hunting is not ethical? There's a perfect place for you out on the California coast.

Isn't "ethical hunter" an oxymoron?

I am very happy to hear about this boys' good will, but I am confused about how they choose those awarded being my son helps people all the time retrieving bucks ( I am not saying he deserves anything for it) and I have never heard of such an award for hunters? Is there somewhere you can look this stuff up?
