Fire destroys rural Brodhead home
DECATUR TOWNSHIP — A fire that likely started in the chimney destroyed a rural Brodhead home this morning, Brodhead Fire Lt. Chris Speth said.
Brodhead firefighters were called at 4:59 a.m. to the one-story ranch home at N4039 Golf Lane, about 4 miles northwest of Brodhead. Flames were visible upon arrival, Speth said, and the roof was collapsing around the chimney and attached garage.
A wood-burning stove was connected to the chimney, he said.
The home, valued at about $200,000, and the contents, estimated at about $30,000, were ruled a total loss, he said.
The owner of the home is Carl Brown, but his grandson, Eric Root, recently had moved into the home and was planning to buy it, Speth said.
Brodhead EMS and Albany, Juda and Orfordville fire departments also assisted.
