Bump in Wisconsin unemployment benefits delayed

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsinites are still waiting for a $25 per week increase in their unemployment benefits.

The increase was supposed to take effect Feb. 22. But Gannett Wisconsin Media reports the state is still working on computer program changes needed to get the money out.

Department of Workforce Development spokesman Chris Marschman says the state is making the changes as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, unemployed workers are receiving benefits under the old levels. Those are capped at $363 per week.

Marschman says unemployed workers who qualify for the $25 increase will get a lump sum to cover the weeks they miss.

The increase comes from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

As Doyle wants to put some money towards roads and water, will he employ the unemployed to do it or will he give the work to the city employees who already have a job???

dogs_rule, you're not the only one in that boat... wonder how many years experience they will expect going into that one.... not to mention, fixing the roads is seasonal work.... where will that leave those workers during the winter months??

ja67: The state did not even know about the $25 increase until a couple of weeks ago. It is part of the federal recovery act.

Doyle just on Fox news. Said he's taking the 2 billion WI. gets and spending it on roads and clean water. Says that will be jobs for thousands. hope they will hire anybody to build roads 'cause I don't think I'd qualify for the job.

Sprout:If there was less products made over seas, than maybe us citizens would be able to buy more american made products. But thanks to uncle sam offering big tax breaks to big companies to make their products in someone else's backyard. You should blame this on the government and not the (patriots)because a lot of them would love to have those jobs that are over seas manufacturing these products and not to mention they would also buy these products if they labeled MADE IN U.S.A

The state should have this all ready to back in December 2008. Then we wouldn't waiting for the increase. It shows how Wisconsin gov. does things. Get better people to do the work......

2xloser, you took the words right out of my mouth....
.
janesvillean, are you a business owner?? what insurance do you pay into to recompensate yourself while you're laid off?? the responsibility does fall on the company/corporation that hired an individual in, not the worker... I, much like many others, have worked to survive, and now, those same survival tactics are being tested due to an extreme lack of job availability... we need jobs more than "free" money...

To Unknown, the govt. can't just spit out jobs although they have a lot of people believing they can. The only thing they can do is provide the tools to help companies make jobs or preserve jobs. In my opinion, tax cuts do nothing for small business in this area because they can't afford to create income to pay taxes on! A real stimulus plan would include upfront cash to small business to pay for inventory, wages, advertising and other things. Then they could hire people, sell products through advertising and then pay taxes. Tax cuts only help larger companies that still have good cash flow. That $25.00 a week on unemployment or $30.00 a week in your pay check will not be noticed and won't cause you to go out and buy a new house or car. Getting Janesville back to work requires cash TODAY to start companies back up not a tax break at the end of the year.

janesvillean - unless armyof3 owned his or her own business...he/she did NOT pay into the fund. It is the employer's responsibility.

Wow, armyof3, did you remember that you paid into the unemployment compensation fund? It's just a form of insurance.

I still think there are jobs to be had working for the state. They seem to be way understaffed at the unemployment office.
