MADISON, Wis. — The cost of being a barber, accountant, social worker and nurse is going up in Wisconsin.

Initial license and renewal costs for those and a host of other professionals were raised Tuesday on an 11-5 vote by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee. A few professions will see a license fee drop, including auctioneer, real estate appraiser and time share salesperson.

But most of the 375,000 affected in 128 professions will see an increase. The Department of Regulation and Licensing will collect about $6.2 million more over the next two years with the increases.

The last time the fees were raised was in 2001.

The initial fee for most occupations will go from $53 to $75. Renewal fees vary from $82 to $170. The new rates take effect Wednesday.

i bet the city council and school board of janesville are trying to figure out how they can get a cut of the cash. why do the politicians think higher taxes will lure businesses to the state and city. it won't happen. all the new gyms and hockey rinks in the world will not get businesses to locate in a state and city with high taxes. but don't expect the dumbell out of control spendaholics to get it.

Governor Doyle would like to thank the Wisconsin Auctioneers Association, the Wisconsin Realtors Association, and Wisconsin chapter of the American Resort Development Association for their totally unrelated campaign contributions this year.

boy, they don't get it do they? If you don't have the money, then cut programs. Don't raise fees as a back door tax to perpetuate the nanny state we already live in.
