Number of Wisconsin abortions drops for the 5th year
MADISON, Wis. — The number of abortions performed in Wisconsin dropped slightly last year to its lowest level since the state began keeping records three decades ago, according to a state report released Tuesday.
The state Department of Health Services study found that 8,229 abortions were performed in Wisconsin last year, down from 8,267 in 2007.
The number of Wisconsin abortions has now fallen for five straight years, since 10,557 abortions were reported in 2003. The 2008 number also was the lowest since Wisconsin started tracking abortions in 1974.
Although the drop was small, it was hailed by anti-abortion advocates.
Barbara Lyons, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life, said her organization was worried abortions might increase in 2008 because abortion clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee that were closed for the last half of 2007 reopened at the beginning of 2008.
"We just see that women are deciding to have their babies,“ Lyons said.
Tanya Atkinson, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, didn’t immediately return a message.
State law requires any facility that provides abortions to report statistics to the Department of Health Services for an annual report.
This year’s report found that girls under age 18 accounted for 500 abortions, down from 551 in 2007. Parents gave their consent in 452 of those cases.
Women between the ages of 20 and 24 accounted for the most abortions at 34 percent. Women aged 35 or older accounted for 12 percent. Women between ages 18 and 19 accounted for 11 percent, while girls between ages 15 and 17 were 6 percent.
Slightly more than three-quarters of abortions performed among state residents were obtained by women who had never been married. A little more than half of abortions were obtained during the first eight weeks of pregnancy, according to the report.

Mikki; what is your problem with recreational sex? If it is between consensual adults and precautions are taken against disease and pregnancy, then how exactly is it hurting society?

Andrew Jackson, are you saying we should kill children who are not well adjusted? Why are some people so evil? It should make you sad to kill a baby.

Andrew Jackson, I am working on my guilt issues, that's why I am commenting here. Also I was paying attention.

As long as some people use sex as a recreational tool, we will have problems as a society.

Oh, and let's start forcing people to have the child. Wonder how well adjusted them children are going to be?

proartist, shouldn't someone represent the child's best interest?
Andrew Jackson, I know some elderly people and mentally retarded people who are not making decisions and contributing to society.. they also are costing us money. Should we kill them too?

SarahB1: IF you're right about those stats (though I've never seen any recent poll stating such) it's probably because so many who remember what women's lives were like before they had reproductive choices are now themselves becoming older and leaving us. I always found it very interesting and telling that those who had lived without choice, were always the most active and vocal because they KNEW the enormous pain and costs to women everywhere while those who have always had options naively work against their own best interests today.

proartist: You forgot to mention one possible reason for the continued decline ... for the first time ever, more people oppose abortion than approve of it. Not sure if that is a factor here or not however.

8,229 babies killed just because the law says it's legal. It is still murder, just made legal to let people who have sex with anyone do away with the consequences of those actions. Just because it's legal does not make it right! You all were unborn at one time, your mothers were brave and chose to not kill you. unborn babies should have a right to life. When you hop into that bed, you've made the choice!! Be responsible and keep your pants on if you don't want a child!!!!

I've resigned myself years ago to the fact that you can't have an intelligent conversation with someone who has a incredible lack of ammunition.

wtp, why is money more important to you than life? And why are you assuming there were no fathers to step forward and help support the children? Many years ago I was excited to become a father for the first time when my girlfriend was pregnant and then devastated to find out she wanted an abortion. Her excuse was she did not want to "get fat" and ruin her body. I did everything I legally could to try change her mind and as a father of course I had no legal right. Now I am married (not to her) and have a child, I support my child and would have loved to support my first child who was legally murdered by a doctor and her mother.

Andrew Jackson, when you say "What an ignorant and short-sighted thing to say." I hope you are referring to your previous sentence. An unborn child is living, will be breathing moments after birth and have a lifetime to contribute and make decisions... That is of course unless the mother decides it is more convenient for her to kill him/her first.

The elderly are LIVING,BREATHING,CONTRIBUTING,DECISION MAKING people with a wealth of information that society uses at every moment of every day. What an ignorant and short-sighted thing to say.

The story is incomplete. What is the reason for the decline? More comprehensive sex education? Better medical care...or a poor economy with lack of finances for care? Less access to options by location or available doctors? Increasing patient and doctor intimidation and harassment by RTL? Population numbers of specific female age groups (just as crime decreases when there is a smaller % of 18-25 males in any given population)? Increasing family involvement or government assistance and support? There is far more to the story than just a decline in the numbers and the reason needs to be studied so this trend continues while, at the same time, keeping legal reproductive medical procedures out of the public/political realm and only within the intimate rights of the individual's life circumstances, the health care provider, and a choice by personal conscience/beliefs.

I agree Sarah, I think people on both sides can agree this is a good thing.
wtp...using your logic shouldn't we dispose of the elderly as well? Aren't they an unnecessary drain on your hard earned income?

The "right-to-lifers" are just scrambling to adopt children. NOT. Instead of judging others, as if you are God himself, why not try living a good life? Instead of focusing on activities that are legal, focus on activities that are illegal like killing Doctors.

You as a tax payer and complaining, I am sure you will be glad to support the mother and baby in your taxes as they file for aid for unwed mothers. Having a baby does not come cheap and many years of bring up the child cost money. Many of these mothers will not hold a job and ends up on your support. I am not happy that I have to support a unwed mother and no father to support that child.

8,229 murders of the most innocent people on earth. Why is it that the mother can decide to murder her child and the father has no say at all?
