From the WCLO newsroom:

A Development Opportunity Zone, included in the state budget, could be one tool to help Janesville's economy recover.

Forward Janesville Vice President of Government Relations Dan Cunningham calls the DOZ is critical for the city's future. The DOZ offers tax incentives for companies creating jobs, or making capital investment.

The governor signed the budget Monday.

I'm sorry, but building water parks, casinos etc., will not address the big issue, which is that we need to start making stuff.

The whole GM property already has the water hookup and size needed for a water park. Imagine the revenue that could be generated from a water park. It could be built so it could run year round, and have (maybe) a small hotel on site for overnight patrons. I do believe it's not a silly idea, janesvillean.

Well, it's a silly proposal, greengina8. Alliant just *closed* a power plant; they have all the capacity they need, apparently. Not to mention the 15 year permitting process.
.
areyouevenlistening, a DOZ is similar to a TIF district, but with tax credits instead of grants or loans. The Gateway project in Beloit is one example. There is a lifetime cap on tax credits of $4.7 million for the entire zone.

The state should get a hold of the GM plant and build a water park. Nuclear power is NOT clean; even less clean than coal.

the state should pursue getting ownership of the GM property and have a nuclear power plant built there.the infrustructure is there, thousands would be employed while building it, the tech schools could teach new operaters, its a win win for everyone.

What kind of tax breaks is the Gov going to give the "DOZ" and why don't existing businesses get those kind of breaks to STAY here? There are no incentives given to small businesses that have been here employing 10-39 employees for years and, now your new budget is going to tax them bigger and I have to ask WHY???????????????? Gov. Doyle I have one thing to say to you, GOOD BYE!!!!!! Get him out next election. I'm just sad that so many of you voted for Obama just because he wasn't Bush (who couldn't run again)or just because he was Black (kind of) I have to believe he is office for a lot of the wrong reasons. Yet I should go back to the topic at hand, sadly this means nothing in the long run.
