JANESVILLE—Fifty-five customers in the Fourth Ward remain without power after an Alliant Energy transformer experienced a problem early Wednesday morning.

The outage was discovered just after 6 a.m. when someone in the 300 block of South Main Street called the Rock County Communications Center and reported the sound of a single shotgun blast coming from across the Rock River.

Instead, authorities discovered the sound came from an Alliant transformer in the downtown area. Alliant crews are on scene working to repair the equipment problem, said Steve Schultz, communications program manager.
