Janesville schools may exceed budget

For the first time in recent memory, the Janesville School District likely will spend more than its annual budget.

The district estimates it could be as much as $600,000 over budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

The district has the resources to cover the overage. The money would come out of the Fund 10 balance. The fund balance, as it is known, is an undesignated reserve. The fund balance had more than $30.5 million in it when it was last audited one year ago.

“That’s exactly what fund balance is for. It’s for those unforeseen circumstances,” district comptroller Lauri Clifton said Monday.

Clifton said an overage has not happened since she started working for the district 17 years ago.

momof2eagles, if you knew anything about what actually takes place at Chestnut House, you would be ashamed of what you have said.

The Staff that has offices at the Chestnut House is just that there offices. When the Kids go to Chestnut it is there regular teachers and more so there regular aides that do all the work with them. Through the grape vine there is going to be a High school class there every day starting this fall to teach living skills to just a few special education students. If this is true with the additions at both schools you think there would be enough room for such a class.

Why not get rid of the Chestnut Street house. There are 3 people staffed there so kids can come down and watch movies and bake cookies. They installed new windows this past year along with new carpet a few years ago. They also have the furnace set at 70 in the winter everyday, including the weekends. Seems to me it is one expense that could be eliminated.

Pizza is right. With all the other overages that happen in city budgets, it's sounds like the school district has done a good job in preparing for a time like this. And believe me, there are already too many cuts in the school district as far as teachers are concered.

Simon, That is a big statement. Can you be more specific on where this is happening and how do you know that it is happening?

Did you guys miss this: "The district has the resources to cover the overage. The money would come out of the Fund 10 balance. The fund balance, as it is known, is an undesignated reserve. The fund balance had more than $30.5 million in it when it was last audited one year ago."

Two options....cut back or tax more. The Janesville School District hasn't figured out how to balance a tough budget yet. Maybe it's time for some classes.

They could have cut a teacher or two at certain schools that don't have a full load and spend an extra hour or two walking halls doing hall duty.
