Sealcoat operations begin; drive cautiously
JANESVILLE--Motorists are advised to drive cautiously on County D, E and H from Hanover to Highway 213 during sealcoat operations scheduled to begin this week, according to Ben Coopman, Rock County Public Works director.
Loose gravel signs, with 35 mph speed advisory signs, have been posted along all routes. The roads will remain open to traffic during work, Coopman said.
After a suitable drying time--from two to five days--the loose stones that remain will be swept off, he said.

I did call today after reading what his was all about in the Gazette Extra. (The signs appeared on Friday or Saturday and didn't make such sense because the big diamond shaped signs are covered in plastic.) Most of them have disappeared in the 25 mph zone except for one on the south end of Afton going into town and another on the corner of Plymouth Church and D (facing Plymouth Church). Both streets are 25 mph at that corner. I guess I will call again tomorrow morning if they are still there.

I am assuming that people will see that the signs are not posted going through afton so people "should" realize that the regular 25 mph speed limit through afton will remain the same

hermione, perhaps that is an oversight. Maybe you should give a quick call to the County Public Works Department. They might appreciate you bringing their mistake to their attention.

The thing that makes no sense at all is that they have already posted signs all the way down County D through the Village of Afton. The diamond shaped signs at the top are covered with black plastic right now but you can see the small rectangular 35 mph sign below it. The speed limit is normally 45 mph through the rural areas on on County D (from north of bypass 11 to south of Plymouth Church Rd), but 25 mph through the village of Afton. Afton has businesses and residences close to the road on both sides of the street and no controlled intersections / crosswalks for pedestrians.
During the summer months they are many children playing and riding bikes in the area. So during the construction with loose gravel when it will potentially more difficult for cars to steer or stop, they are going to INCREASE the speed limit through the Village of Afton by 10 mph? What genius came up with this idea??
