Craig's basketball court is too long

No harm, no foul, as they say in the sports world.

Such is the case in Craig High School’s new fieldhouse, which has a basketball floor sized for the college game, not the shorter, standard length of high school courts.

The lines painted on the wooden floor will be removed and repainted sometime this summer, said Doug Bunton, school district business director.

The district won’t be charged for the work, Bunton said.

justsome1here..Since you are on the subject that seems to never be let go...do you know that for a fact that a lot of schools with a solid backround in athletics with the community and school board's support do better in school? If Janesville backed athletics and made every student accountable for their wrong doings with no tolerance of such action like these other schools, there would be a lot less of these problems as kids would have a sense of pride. Heck, some kids don't care if they even graduate any longer. In addition, how can you say that Janesville does not care about education? Are you saying that it is the teacher's responsibility to get your and everyone's child to school? You think they say, I don't care if so-and-so cannot read or write, and we here at Janesville school district think it is great to put out into the population illiterate people that will be nothing to the community. You want to focus on education, ask yourself, if you are a parent, what can I be doing in addition to help my child better himself/herself. Be supportive of teachers, working together, make your child accountable for their actions, step up be active in your child's life/education, and furthermore...stop placing blame. And as Sparks said, Move on!!

spark - It is a sad commentary that when it finally passed (how many times did it fail?) the “gyms” were an addition. If this community really thought that education was more important, then it would have passed during the first round (which I proudly voted yes).
.
Would like to move on, however, my property tax bill is a constant reminder. Just because it is in the past does not mean that we (collectively) should not be reminded of what happened so we do not repeat it in the future.

Just to clarify, I completely agree about the importance of education. I also think it's most important. I also believe sports teach discipline and keep kids out of trouble. I see no point in using a story about how the floor was painted to once again, bring up the past.

justsome1here - I couldn't disagree more with you and that's I voted yes for it all. Actually, the majority voted yes, hence why it passed. Case closed. Move on.

spark – The “error” was made when the taxpayers of the city decided that the only way they would pass the referendum was with the addition of the large gyms instead of taking into considering that what differentiates a good school district from a great school district is the education that the students receive, not the size of their gyms. As stated previously, the money would have been better spent elsewhere.

The mistake was that Parker did have the extended floor and the contractors thought that Craig wanted the same. Parker's coaches want to give there teams the work out that the extra footage gives. Its only I belive 10 feet. Also it states in the full atricle that Craig will be moving to the fieldhouse for all there games since there bleachers in the Gym are too old! So the old Gym will become the practice gym and the Fieldhouse there new Gym

Let's see. The article simply states the error that was made. It then states that the district will not be charged for the mistake. I just thought I would clarify that for those of you knobs that can't obviously read. Instead you read the title of the story before reading on so you can immediately start posting your 5 year old whiny a#* comments. Anything to get a complaint out. Don't hold yourselves back. Unbelievable.

outsiders don't care what we value. we are the ones that have to live with our "vlaues" our value system is priced to high and extravagant. i can't get over the insane planning and spending. janesville is a lib city and spends money trying to create an image that does not fit. next up: new high school w/three gyms and two pools. that will teach the taxpayers and show them who is in charge.

newswacko - Outsiders might see the facade of the building but what they really value is the quality of the education that comes out of those buildings. Having a field house is not proportional to a achieving a better education. Hopefully, outsiders are smart enough to look past the façade to see what is really important.

Gosh, I swear that people complain about everything. Fieldhouse, gym, big room, convention center... get over it.

Besides, the facilities a community builds and supports shows outsiders what we value. I guess that is why the only money people want to see spent is to spruce up a certain property on Jackson street.

And to think that the voters were duped into thinking these additions were NOT field houses but really big gyms (not). The money would have been better spent elsewhere!

So do they also have to move the backboards as well?

Who will pay for this mistake?

Those who lined the floor were told to add the extra space for an area to display the gold balls. They must have thought they were at Parker.
