The National Weather Service says there’s a moderate risk for severe thunderstorms in southern Wisconsin starting Thursday afternoon and continuing into the night.

Some storms could bring damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. This forecast is for areas south of a line from Wisconsin Dells to Milwaukee.

UPDATE: The weather service says the rain moving in from the west on Thursday afternoon is dissipating and won't push east of Green, Dane and Sauk counties. However, storms this evening still have potential for producing severe weather.

More from the National Weather Service:

“Current indications suggest scattered severe thunderstorms will develop over northern Iowa/southern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin by mid afternoon. These thunderstorms will then form a squall line and travel east into southern Wisconsin. The most probable time for severe thunderstorms over southern Wisconsin is between 4 p.m. and midnight.

“Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes will be possible with any storms that develop. The severe threat should evolve toward damaging winds as the evening progresses. …

“Now is the time to prepare for severe weather by having an action plan ready should these storms approach. “

Was 1972 the year that those twisters hit all around, and hit the school in Belvidere, or was that in the 60's?

Do horses get upset at thunderstorms, like they do in the movies?

Frank--> Oh for sure, and I completely agree with you. We had a "twister" take a rental house down back when I was 10 or 11. We also lost our suburban and my favorite bike, due to several trees falling. Thank god for great insurance as I got a new bike. :0)

I love a storm as much as the next person, but one has to keep an eye out. There's always that one-in-a-thousand storm that will kill, maim or drop a tree on your house. -- Gazette reporter and Frank Schultz, whose grandparents lost barn and house to a twister in Minnesota back in '72.

I sure do love a good ol' storm. There's nothing like sitting in the garage with a drink and some music. :)

I'm in Cedar Rapids today and this storm cell just passed through here. It was so dark the street lights came on.

Gary Canulte's Doppler Radar 3000 concurs. I'll guess by noon we'll be scrambling for cover (unless you like being in the rain).
