Wis. astronaut returns to space
WINTER, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin astronaut Jeffrey Williams will make his third trip into space on board the Russian Soyus rocket this September.
Williams will return to the International Space Station where he will serve as flight engineer for two months, then mission commander for the final four months.
The 51-year-old astronaut from Winter spent six months at the space station in 2006. Now the station is nearly finished. The last modules will be in place by the time Williams returns to Earth in mid-March of 2010.
He's been training since last summer in Star City, Russia as well as Germany, Japan and Canada, where other members of the six-person crew live. He says the space station is a truly international effort to build a platform to the moon and Mars.
