Legislature’s proposal for landfill fees could cost Janesville
A proposed increase in state landfill fees could force Janesville to consider charging residents for garbage collection.
Even though the city owns the landfill, it could owe an additional $127,000 if Wisconsin legislators increase tipping fees.
Landfill operators are required to pay the state $5.90 per ton of garbage dumped, but the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance recently OK’d a proposal to increase those tipping fees to $13 per ton.
The city pays fees to the state on the 18,000 tons of residential trash city workers collect each year. Janesville charges other users $21.80 per ton.
City Manager Eric Levitt said it’s too soon to guess how a state fee increase of $7.10 per ton would affect city services or charges.

SUPER, I understand you have your opinions as well, and I also understand that because you don't agree with mine, you have a need to make me look 'naive'. And that's OK..... ;)

RummageSalesRock: Huh? I'm glad that you are sure of your opinion, whatever that means. And your comment "with evolution, taxes are expected to increase to better a community" is extremely naive, not to mention a misuse of the term "evolution". So we'll put you down as one vote for creeping socialism - got it.

Seriously, most on here that complain about having to pay for this or that, are, I am sure in my opinion, people that enjoy the luxuries of most technology. And with evolution, taxes are expected to increase to better a community. That is just the way it is. Sure, there are things that some don't use, therefore, they believe they are a waste of their money, but that doesn't make it true. Y'all are going to have a heart attack if you don't calm down. :)

Increase the fees for those who aren't local to make up the difference, not increase the cost to the local people.

Look at the March 2009 Park Place News. "Your City of Janesville Tax Dollars" Cost per year for SANITATION: $13.13. If tipping fees are raised, it will affect the people that produce the most garbage - private haulers and businesses - which do not comply 100% with WI recycling laws. Residential garbage adds up to around 16,000 tons per year, whereas business trash is 116,000 tons per year, and garbage trucked in from who-knows-where is around 100,000 tons per year. There is a big difference. Janesville City residents should be DEMANDING a raise in tipping fees, so the people that are GENERATING the garbage, are the ones PAYING for it. Higher tipping fees will promote dumping LESS garbage while keeping the landfill's income the same, and also promote recycling. Another note: why should my kids pay to clean up the messes made by current dumpers? Our generation needs to be responsible, and take care of/pay for our own garbage - instead of leaving the mess for someone else to clean up. Just because dumping "seems" to make money for our current residents, doesn't make the situation acceptable. In reality - the whole thing is backwards. It makes no sense.

Gee Janesville, maybe you should call your State Rep. Maybe it will hit home to him that all of these fee increases ultimately end up costing REAL people.

We could also start a citywide trash rummage sale! Problem solved! No more posts needed. Get on with your lives.

We can put all the trash on a big trailer and let it circle the city never finding a place to be dumped just like the barges in the ocean.

this is one of the many taxes jimmy d will say he did not enact. just watch, when (if) he runs again, he will claim he kept his 2003 promise of never raising taxes -- and lots of people will believe him.

By what right does the state charge the city for the use of city property? ("the city owns the landfill"). Here's a thought - abolish the fee altogether.

The way i see it is they can't control their spending,so the answer is tax us to the death. Maybe it's time for all of us to get out of this state!

Big surprise...a fee increase effects the taxpayers not government or business'; yet the cowards in government think they can raise fees and say with a straight face they never raised your taxes.
