The Milton School District approved a plan to conduct a professional survey of the community regarding a referendum but did not approve a date for the survey, practically guaranteeing it will not be done in fall.

The district has discussed building a new high school for two years, but the economy has caused plans to slow down. The survey would find out what the community would support.

The company that would administer the survey, School Perceptions of Slinger, requires about two months to create the survey. The majority of board members said now is not the right time to survey the community because the results would only be accurate for about one year.

The board also approved sending preliminary layoff notices to five staff members totaling 2.6 full-time-equivalent positions.
