BURKE — A pickup truck struck and killed a road worker near Sun Prairie on Thursday.

Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Schaeffer says the truck was traveling north on Highway 151 around 2:30 p.m., and the driver didn’t obey the signs alerting cars to move into the right lane.

The pickup then rear-ended a highway truck parked in the left lane that the victim had just exited and then struck the worker.

The driver was taken to UW Hospital in Madison with non life-threatening injuries.

Oops, dogsrule got it right, I meant Mt. Zion, not Pontiac. It's been a long day.

Probably stayed in that lane trying to get ahead of everyone and merge at the last minute. Just as retarded as the idiots who wait until the last second to take an offramp from the LEFT lane.

Answer's the same as for all other criminal activities--make the penalties draconian enough that non-caring idiots will conform their behavior out of self-interest. For example, 14 years (or better- whatever it takes) seems reasonable--plus lifetime revocation of driver's license, confiscation of the vehicle, & child support for any surviving children.

janesvillecomments, your points of reference don't make sense. There is no block between Black Bridge Road and Pontiac on Milton Avenue. Pontiac crosses Blackbridge Road a long way from Milton Avenue. You can't travel between Blackbridge and Pontiac on Milton Avenue.

CASEY! I totally agree with you! I am one to slow down for any thing or being near the road, construction or not, and I always try to go out and around. And YES! You get people right up on your rear like they are going to push you on. Makes me so mad! And this tragedy just made me realize what I do it right, and those bullies can just stay behind my slow car! I remember driving home from MI a few years ago over the skyway in Chicago when it was under construction and the speed limit was very low, I don't remember, but I went slower yet, because there were vehicles, machinery and people all over, and the lanes were barely wide enough for a semi to go through and I had idiots blowing their horns at me and SPEEDING past me. Probably going faster the the speed limit under NORMAL conditions. Some people just don't get it! And as sad as this sounds, I wish they could experience that feeling of loss from someone being as careless as they are!

Several times a week some cretin will be driving South on Milton Avenue in the right lane at the block between Blackbridge Road and Pontiac Drive where the right lane is right-turn only onto Pontiac. They will speed up and cut in front of a driver in the middle lane, forcing them to slow down, rather than tapping their brakes and pulling in behind the driver when there is more than 10 car lengths of space before the next car.

This is a perfect example of how ignorant people are when driving, most wont slow down to let you merge let alone pass. Such a shame.

It's so sad!!! I mean they have to go and work on the bad driver, too. I just wish they could have saved the worker somehow, you know.

You would be shocked at how many times I am working on the shoulder and people have no one next to them and there to dam lazy to move over one lane. I have people yell obstinacy’s at me, throw stuff, buzz me because they think it funny, give me the finger. We are out there trying to make the highways safer and this is the thanks we get. My hart goes out to this mans family someone lost a father, husband, son, ect. Why? Because of a cell phone or running late.

People don't care. They don't think they need to slow down or move over just to make it easier, or safer, for road workers.

I hate it when I'm traveling and in a construction zone and people have got to get right on your butt because you've slowed down!

How hard is it for people to slow down? Everyone should know that when there's construction you need to be extra alert for lane closures, people, and other vehicles. How sad someone had to lose their life. It certainly could have been avoided. My thoughts and prayers with both families.
