Obama appoints Cameron Davis as Great Lakes czar
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — President Barack Obama has named Cameron Davis, president of a Chicago-based environmentalist group, to oversee the administration's initiative to clean up the Great Lakes.
Davis is president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, one of the organizations that has lobbied for implementation of a restoration program expected to cost more than $20 billion.
The alliance announced the appointment Wednesday.
Davis will coordinate efforts of about a dozen federal agencies working on the Great Lakes project, which deals with issues such as invasive species, polluted harbors, sewage overflows and degraded wildlife habitat.
Obama promised during his campaign last year to create such a position. His proposed 2010 budget seeks $475 million in new spending on the lakes.

DrTalk, this is to fulfill our obligations under the US-Canadian Great Lakes Treaty as well as the newly signed Great Lakes Compact. The states, which have already spent billions, are asking for federal assistance in the cleanup.

.
Obama does seem to like his czars (a term that has been used in government since the early 1900s). It doesn't create any new authority to name someone "czar" instead of "adviser", though. Mostly only the media use the term.

why does everything have to be called a czar now?, and isn't it a little suspicious that the federal gov. wants to control everything now?? Are we now the U.S.S.A.?

Whatever happened to the Great Lakes Compact? The Great Lake states and Canadian provinces should be taking care of this, not the federal government.
