2 Wis. guard units temporarily moved
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Two Wisconsin National Guard units in Iraq have been temporarily moved as the U.S. empties detention facilities in Camp Bucca near the southern border.
When the state Guard was deployed to Iraq in May, eight of the 27 company-sized units were stationed at Bucca.
Military officials say the units relocated to Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, are Company A, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry of Waupun and Ripon and the outfit's Company D, based in Marinette.
Col. Steven Bensend commands the 3,300 Wisconsin Guard troops in Iraq. Bensend says at least two more units will also be involved in transport missions in the next few months. He wasn't specific.
As part of the withdrawal agreement with Iraq, Bucca is to be emptied of detainees this year, but other operations will remain there. U.S. troops are transferring those detainees facilities closer to Baghdad.
