JANESVILLE – For the first time ever, the Rock County 4-H Fair STAR singing contest resulted in a tie.

The winners of the 14-17 age bracket during the finals Wednesday night at the fairgrounds were Courtney Gors, 15, of Machesney Park, Ill., and Sammi Lynn Tracy, 16, Janesville.

Winning the age 8-13 division was Hannah Morgan, 12, of Roscoe, Ill.

The winner of the adult division was Michelle Smukowski, 24, of Cudahy.

The fair continues through Sunday at the fairgrounds in Janesville. Thursday's grandstand entertainers are a Johnny Cash tribute act and Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers.

A contest is just that. The most talented wins. I'm glad to see that it was done fair and square. I've been to other County Fair Idol contests and totally did not agree with the outcome. These young ladies were the best, most talented and deserved to win. Kudos to the judges!

The winner from Cudahy said she is a theatre major, not a music major. Not that it matters. The contest set rules, the rules were followed, and the winners were chosen by unbiased judges. The reason there were no rules regarding residency is probably because the fair likes to bring in people from other areas to enjoy the great county fair. Smart marketing idea, and I agree ... American Idol certainly doesn't limit anybody because they are looking for the best talent, which is the goal of any real contest. Kudos to Rock County 4-H for doing a great job and also for stepping up to the plate to reward two girls who tied, and for not disappointing them!

best4kids: I agree with you 100%. Just like American Idol, if the try outs are in New York, people from states all over come to try out. That's why the cities market themselves to host the tryouts each year. Great for the local economy.

Kudos to all of the winners and those brave enough to try out.

It is the Rock Co 4-H Fair Star Contest, NOT the Rock Co. Star Contest. I think it is great that people from counties outside of ours are enjoying our county fair, and bringing in revenue for our county.

It is called the Rock County Star for a reason.. I think we should ONLY allow people from Rock county in it!! It is silly that somone with a music major from Cudahy won the prize also!! Although she was a great singer!!

The rules did not limit the contest to Rock County residents. So anyone in the contest had a fair chance to win.

I am sorry, but maybe i missed something.
.
How in the heck do people not from Rock County win against those from Rock County. That should be the tie-breaker! Give it to Sammi and be done with it. Geez!
