Marquette gets $1.4M to study cocaine addiction
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Researchers at Marquette University have a $1.4 million grant to study treatment for cocaine addiction.
The Milwaukee scientists are trying to develop chemicals that can be used to break a cocaine addiction.
According to the research team, people who use cocaine casually become addicted when something changes chemically in the brain. The scientists hope to understand what's changing, and see whether drugs can be developed that interfere with the addiction process.
The Marquette researchers will collaborate with scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the Stanford Research Institute.
The two-year grant announced Monday comes from the National Institutes of Health.

I've known a lot of people who have been addicted to the "Devils Dust" and "The Bouger Suger" and you don't have to be a scientist to figure out that the only time they crave it is when they are on it! I personally know of people that have kicked the habit just by going a few weeks without it! (and these were not casual users) $1.4 Million is a lot of money and could possibly be cut (no pun intended)in half by the department of justice donating cocaine they have confiscated and tested and tried the dealer on........ Government has it now use it for something positive and I have to ask the same question as Rooster, Need Any Volunteers? From what I've been told about it it's way better than Slim Fast~ Give us the weekend we'll take off the weight..... And nobody ever talks about the positive side affects of cocaine...... Like the song says "And We'll All Stay Skinny Cuz We Just Won't Eat Hey Yah I Wanna Be A
Rock Star"

Why can't they just go onto the streets? Isn't that where most junkies wonder at some point during their high? Oh, except the rich kids hide out at home. Sorry, I forgot!

I've known plenty with addicted people in my life! Stupid people take drugs and alcohol and abuse them. I shouldn't have to pay to find out why! I can tell you: they are irresponsible and should take what ever they get for what happens to them. Now these Professors take my tax money to "study" people addicted to cocaine. Where will these people come from and will they give them free coke to study them???? It's ridiculous! and a waste of MY money! You can donate to their cause but I don't want to!

These scientist are smart, now they can buy cocaine legally and use it and get paid for doing it, no wonder they are professors!

Yes, whoanellie, and this is exactly what I pay taxes for. Perhaps you have the great fortune to have never known anyone with an addiction.
