Lafayette County may seek aid for storm damage
DARLINGTON — Officials in Lafayette County say they may seek a disaster declaration after storms destroyed crops there Friday.
The National Weather Service says two tornadoes touched down in the county early Friday evening as severe thunderstorms moved through the area. The weather service says hail damage was observed in a swath of 4 to 5 miles from near Platteville, southwest of Belmont, to just east of Shullsburg.
Lafayette County Board chairman Jack Sauer told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that exact numbers are still being tallied but that as many as 20,000 acres of corn and soybeans may have been damaged or destroyed.
