FITCHBURG — The Dane County coroner has identified the woman who died of apparent smoke inhalation after a fire burned in her apartment building this weekend. She is Ruth A. Johnson, 80.

The coroner’s office says paramedics on Saturday were able to keep Johnson alive long enough for her to be taken to a local hospital. But she was pronounced dead after being transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be a hyperbaric chamber facility in Madison, which would be the most likely reason she was transferred. The chamber would help remove carbon monoxide from her blood.
