Survey asks how to control deer herd
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State wildlife officials want to hear your ideas about how to control Wisconsin's deer herd.
A Natural Resources Board advisory committee plans to post a survey online beginning Saturday. The survey will be online until at least Tuesday.
The board created the advisory committee after it decided earlier this year to abolish the contentious Earn-A-Buck program, which required hunters to shoot a doe before they could take a buck.
The committee is made up of volunteers from organizations representing hunters and landowners. The group hopes to present recommendations to the board early next month.
The survey will be available on the committee's Web site, deerherd.editme.com.

miltonalum - That comment was more geared towards jvldss. I'm not saying anyone dieing is acceptable. Of course it's not! The point is, look at the statistics. Pretty damn amazing when you look at the numbers. Something this state should be proud of rather than assuming everyone deer hunting is an unsafe drunk. As far as the rifle rule, I understand some of your frustration. Not sure why they changed that. I also bow hunt, but I also do the gun hunting tradition. I don't agree that it's cheating. If we only had bowhunting, we'd have serious population problems. Not to mention there are many unethical bowhunters out there that aren't skilled enough and take poor shot placement never to recover the animal. Be safe out there!

I never said i was against hunting bud. And by the way 1 person died and that was acceptable, what exactly would be an unnacceptable number? where exactly is the line? Id be willing to bet that for at least 1 family that number is 1.
.
Deer hunting is not a problem, sometimes the dnr's logic is, besides I dont hunt with anything but a bow even shotguns are cheating.

642,000 deer licenses were sold last year in Wisconsin. One person died. Tell me that deer hunting isn't safe in Wisconsin. It amazes me how many are so uneducated on certain topics, yet are the first to chime in and sound so stupid. By the way, this article has nothing to do with safety.

What i dont understand is them allowing the use of rifles now in previously shotgun only areas. The reason for the shotgun only areas were because of the population density and the safety of residents getting hit by a rifle round 2 miles away. Now all of a sudden the deer herd is a problem it is ok to use a rifle now where it was previously deemed unsafe? Seems they are less worried about public safety and more about the deer herd, nothing has changed to make rifles more safe in these areas.
.
I believe in hunting and hunt myself but that makes no sense whatsoever.

That's what we need - more drunks with high powered rifles running around the woods year round blasting at everything that moves. There, that makes about as much sense as "they were made for eating".

Just let them be hunted year round, they were made for eating after all! It is ridiculous that people can't hunt when they want to anyway. How do you think people survived back in the day? sometimes that was all they had to eat was the latest kill. Common sense!

You can first start by re-wording your idea of "abolish the earn-a-buck program. YOU STILL HAVE TO SHOOT A DOE IN CERTAIN AREAS. This is not a statewide abolish and everytime something is written about it, that's how its played out. DNR, do you know how many people you have confused still on this years regulations? I've talked to so many people that think they don't need to shoot a doe anywhere in the state including the CWD areas.
