The exodus continues.

More than 200 workers at the General Motors assembly plant in Janesville met Thursday’s deadline to take up the automaker on its latest early retirement/buyout program.

That’s on top of the 600 or 700 local employees who have transferred in recent months to other GM plants, said Andy Richardson, president of United Auto Workers Local 95.

GM’s latest special attrition program—its second of the year—ended at the Janesville plant Thursday afternoon. Shortly before the 3:30 p.m. deadline, Richardson said 215 workers had signed up.

It was likely a few more could trickle in by the deadline, he said.

Shorty, it sounds like you are really broken up over JD. Maybe you can set a picture of him near your bed to help you sleep at night.

To those worried about JD, he HAS accepted a transfer to Fort Wayne. He IS leaving his family behind as he TOO has kid's in high school. I know his wife also has two parent's dealing with alot of medical issues. So let's not go throwing stones at someone who did his best to keep Janesville alive. From knowing the family, they have taken alot of BS from the nay-sayers whenever they thought JD wasn't doing his job. Well, he hasn't been the one that has jumped ship when the seas were rocky. Best of luck to all that have to transfer, it's not an easy thing to do.

I too hope things will turn around for this community. I truly believe that this area is going to now feel the absence of the workers. Makes a persons heart heavy to think of families that are now divided for various resons with these transfers. Hopefully those employees that have left families behind, the time will pass quickly; as I know several are only transerferring due to time vested and nearing retirement. Good luck to everyone, and hopefully the schools won't have more cuts ahead in already trying times.

Rumor has it, Pres. Richardson is waiting out his unemployment ben. after he is done at the plant, then has toyed with the idea of policeman. He should be laid off, and has to do alot of "donated" time, but I'm sure there are ways he gets around that.

I notice on the Local 95 Web site President Richardson is all smiles and dressed very fine. Can someone tell me were he is moving? It seems not everybody is having to make hard choices. Is he still getting paid to run Local 95? Jusk asking.

Best of luck to those who are moving to other plants and those who have decided the buyout is the right way to go for their career. Janesville will be solid again but it will take time.

Good luck to them. I understand the animosity GM workers bring to many other workers in the area. Either way it's a bad situation. As far as looking for work, Dane county's unemployment is only 6.7 percent. I was laid off and recently found a nice paying job in Madison. The drive stinks, but there is no other choice.

Good luck to the GM workers, for better or for worse, it's the end of an era.

I'm confused by the first line of the article..."The exodus continues." The article speaks of the various GM buyout options and has only a paragraph or two that speaks of workers who have transfered to another GM site. Seems like poor editing.
