JANESVILLE -- The Janesville Police Department is investigating the explosions of two homemade chemical bombs set off Monday and Tuesday nights.

A “works” or “MacGyver” bomb was placed inside an open vehicle Monday at 705 Kellogg Ave., damaging the windshield and seats when it exploded, according to a police department news release.

A second bomb erupted Tuesday inside a mailbox at 2019 DuPont Drive, according to the news release.

Gary, I wouldnt be blaming Mythbusters. They dont divulge the ingredients. Quite honestly its not hard to find out how via the net.

I wouldnt say these bombs arent lethal. Anything that explodes can be lethal. May not be as likely, but they still could kill.

Were these the chlorine and alcohol bombs mixed in a soda bottle that they show on youtube? I'm guessing that some kids were curious to try them out for themselves. I think that I have also seen them demonstrated on cable shows, possibly "MythBusters". Parents need to talk about the dangers of these devices to their children. I have also seen sodium and potassium bombs mixed with water that are more incendiary, but these substances are expensive and harder to get.

I suppose the question arises whether this was targeted harassment, or just random.

Not so much worried about the "bombs" themselves, but about the destruction of property. That's really the wrong in the whole situation.

Sounds like some kids with too much time on their hands. About 15 years ago, myself and some friends made a "works bomb" in Milton and the guy who actually mixed the 2 household items needed ended up getting charged with a class C felony, other kid who provided the items got a misdemeanor and those of us who watched had our parents notified by the PD. Unfortunately they are extremely easy to make with nothing more than 2 very common household items and a plastic soda bottle. "Works" bombs aren't lethal, but I suppose if you were holding one when it exploded your hands would be a mess and you'd probably have some nasty chemical burns. I'm just glad that when we did made one it was more of a "boys will be boys" attitude, today there are probably much more severe consequences for any type of incendiary device.

sannio, inside or outside city limits making your own explosives is illegal.

I just learned the addresses where the bombs went off. I added them to the story. Thanks, Ted Sullivan

Go outside the city limits and do it, and don't destroy other people's property when you do.

where is this happening in Janesville? Was it two different areas or in the same vicinity? Great what's next...
