UPDATE: Suspect taken into custody in standoff

A standoff in the 2300 block of Center Avenue, Janesville, has ended and a suspect has been taken into custody, said Sgt. Terry Sheridan with the Janesville Police Department.

Ronald Gapski, 49, surrendered peacefully after officers deployed tear gas, Sheridan said. Gapski had been standing on the roof armed with a butcher knife, according to a news release from the department.

No one was injured, Sheridan said.

The standoff started at about 11 a.m. and ended at about 2:30 p.m.

Center Avenue is now open in both directions.

yall are kinda selfish and dumb. why shot him. even thou i told the cop he should have... there is no justice for the victim. once convicted he will never have the change to hurt anyone. but even in a prison there are unspeakable crimes. and hurting kids... they dont take to kindly to it. my heart goes out to all the victims of this man. those spoken of and those who are not.

Sexual assault of a child. That should have been an easy decision. Shoot him off the roof. Case closed.

Hannah- The first two were strictly updates to let those in the area know that there was something going on. The first letting the area know that the road was barricaded, the 2nd an update as to why. I'm not saying that this was the best way to go about things, but they were also not letting family member into the immediate area right away. The final article came out after more information was available, and it is still not telling the whole story. The Gazette was following the guidelines set forth by policy and, while it would have been nice to have a better story right away, they are limited to the amout of risks that they can take. So, I hope this answers your question as to why this wasn't all put into one article. The person who comented on the updated article that came out today is a family member. She may have been a little upset about the situation, but as she indicated, family came up from Dixon to try to help diffuse the situation.

I have to say Doc does make some good points, if memory serves me correct he was first to comment on this story with information that he had, he also wasn't afraid to speak the reality of access to situation. I can not agree more about his comment about the Gazette responding differently than if this was a weekday. I in no way mean that to offend Ms. Vogel-I appreciate her and those with her covering what they were able to and I also appreciate them not putting themselves in the way-but the fact is the Gazette cuts corners way to big on the weekends-it's become more and more obvious over time.

Could it be that the Gazette is padding softly since the photo of the murderer giving the finger generated so much criticism? I thought the photo was great photo journalism and the Gazette should not back down on showing the idiotic nature of these criminals.

With regard to some of the posts here, it's interesting how much animosity can be bred by anonymity. Thanks for providing some good details, doc. For the part of town with a highway blocked off for nearly four hours by Swat Team activity, this was a big event. There were most certainly businesses and private citizens affected. Would the story have had different importance if it had happened on Milton Ave.? I'm just glad no one got hurt.

I saw this story on Channel 3 out of Madison last night and they reported that it occurred in Rock County, they didn't specify that it was in Janesville. This isn't the first time that they've done something like this.
.
A cynic might conclude that since their association with the Gazette, Channel 3 has been asked to downplay crime reports that might make Janesville look bad.

If it wasn't for the Doc's observation, we would have had no clue as to the details of this event. I appreciate that he bothered to post what he saw. I read the Gazette's article in Monday's paper, everything was played down. I guess the Gazette prints 'just the facts maam.' I've obviously become a sensationalized journalism fan. Thanks everyone for letting us know what happened yesterday.

If he only had a butcher knife, I wonder if the police considered calling in a fire truck to wash him off the roof?
.
If the Gazette staff didn't know the the disturbed person only had a butcher knife, they were smart not to go around the police blockade. I'm pretty sure the Gazette isn't paying enough money for their reporters to take a bullet for the news.

doc0430>> OMGosh, if the police have the streets blocked off then people should have sense enough to stay away!! Just because you CAN walk down the street, doesn't mean you SHOULD! Obviously, it was a situation that could have been very volatile. It would be just like one of those walked down to sue someone if they got hurt because they were where they shouldn't have been!! People really need to use some common sense!!

concernedmom, glock21sf, 1st of all I have A job, 2nd the whole point I was making was that if this had happened Mon-Fri between 8am and 4:30pm the paper would've been all over it, to alert area residents of the possible danger of this standoff,(if you think they would'nt have done this your dumber than you sound) it is the news papers responsibility to keep us informed of such things- period! It's over they missed it move on~ I am....... Some of you are more worried about what I've said here than what actually happened, thats what I guess is really sad, get A clue maybe Wal-Mart will have them on sale this week! Sometimes the truth not only hurts but may offend, DEAL WITH IT!!!!!

My thoughts go out to this tortured man and his family. Surely, there is much pain behind this little drama. I have no sympathy, however, for people who want a reporter to break the law, risk getting arrested and then risk her life. And for what? To satisfy your morbid curiousity? You've been watching too much TV.

People shouldn't be curious or care about what is happening to other people. If you see a body lying face down on the sidewalk, just walk around it and pretend that it isn't there. It's none of your business what happened. If you see an accident on the highway, don't slow down and look. You are inconveniencing the people behind you. The best thing to do is just speed on by and look straight ahead. Don't worry, everyone will stay out of your way. The main thing to remember is don't slow down and don't look.

Yeah-we don't really want pictures-pretty soon this town would be trying to sell them-but if the Gazette had a 24-7 tip line (not just a recording) but a live person taking call-in information with tips and hopefully inside information that would be helpful-in addition to on the scene reporting-the Gazette and area Police seriously need to have a meeting about the Gazette's access then maybe people wouldn't worry as much about having to find out for themselves-but otherwise doc is right when he stated in his first post we really do need to rely on each other for posting info the gazette can't get-I just wish we could do it without the harshness.

doc...get over yourself...What is with the voyeur mentality on these blogs? This could have turned very tragic very fast and all you people care about is that there aren't any pictures here to look at. Why should the people at the Gazette risk their lives to get that perfect picture for you? Even if they did you probably would have cirticized the pictures anyway. The people standing in the parking lot watching are idiots and shouldn't have been there either.

Whatever the case, thank you to the Gazette for promptly reporting the story and I am glad all is safe. I would think if there was a standoff-anywhere within eyesight of the suspect (let alone 'two doors down' would be unsafe)-allows police more distraction-risking tragic outcome. Why is there so much unneccesary hostility on these boards? A lot of us have different takes on things but that doesn't mean we have to be so disrespectful.

I expect a higher degree of zeal in my weekend reporters providing breaking news for free online. Pithy updates won't cover the gamut of information on this late breaking development.

Also, the story would have been much better if Ms. Vogel had complicated the scene by climbing onto the roof for an interview. Or perhaps a photo.

I was there and it was only A block not several and you could walk right down to the parking lot nextdoor to the house where this all happened (LOTS OF OTHERS DID), I was there two doors down (staying out of the police dept's way) and could see everything going on. I believe traffic was blocked more out of fear that this clown would've run out in front of A car or truck since it was outside and the police wanted to kind of try and surround the house. You should've seen it! Don't tell me you couldn't get down there just because you couldn't drive up on his lawn......

They deployed the gas outside the HOUSE (not A building)he was above the front porch on the roof, And they had to do it twice not to mention that he didn't actually surender he was tackled by SWAT! If the Gazette would've actually been out there they would've known this is actually what happened as I watched the whole thing as it went down sure missed seeing you guys there........Oh well you us faithful readers to let you know what happened.......
