Swine flu death reported in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee adolescent is the fifth person to die of swine flu in Wisconsin.
Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker said Tuesday the victim was an adolescent with a common underlying medical condition who died over the last 24 hours at a health care facility.
Two adults and one adolescent in Milwaukee had already died from the virus as well as a 12-year-old Wausau girl.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control show Wisconsin has had more than 6,000 cases — the most in the nation. State officials have attributed the high number to an early aggressive testing policy and the state having four laboratories to do the work.
Research by a UW-Madison flu expert released Monday shows the virus is more severe than ordinary winter flu.

> and those with conditions which affect their immune system, such as HIV, cancer, Athsma etc..are more suseptable,
DEAD WRONG. "Pun" most certainly intended. This particular strain of influenza kills people who have healthy to the point of overactive immune systems, cf. cytokine storm.
And regarding your other post...
> Elderberry, has been proven time and again, in clinical studies, to kill the virus.
IMPOSSIBLE. Properly done, double-blind clinical studies that have any reasonable degree of statistical confidence take many months, often years, to collect and analyze the data. This mutation of the influenza virus has only existed, so far as is known, since March of this year. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to have already correlated to a high degree of statistical confidence ANY mechanism for defeating this virus.
As already stated and I cannot underscore the point enough:
You are irresponsible in the extreme.

I believe that the H1N1 flu has on average killed more people in the middle age group than the younger or older. So in that respect it is not the "same with most other varities of the flu virus".

Vesta, I find the touting of unproven cures for an illness that is known to kill irresponsible in the extreme, but that's just me. It's the 21st century; aren't we a little past the snake oil era?
.
SarahB1, I agree. This isn't as scary as the 1918 flu, which oddly struck down large numbers of completely healthy younger adults, but it's still reaching deep into populations that are considered able to weather the average flu. My BMI puts me in the "obese" category (one reason I just got back from a 6-mile bike ride) so that is definitely unsettling. There is going to be a vaccination program sometime this fall, and I hope that I would qualify for my risk factors -- my family needs me too much right now even to have me hospitalized. Because of that I'm going to watch my symptoms even more carefully than I have been.
.
And maybe by fall I'll have a lower BMI ....

Scientists following the swine flu also came across what they termed "shocking" news: This flu is killing those who are very overweight yet considered healthy before contracting this virus. The scientists were not focusing on this section of the population but said the outcome numbers were so abnormal. For example, out of 10 very obese patients with swine flu being treated on life support in ICU, 8 died. What is killing these people? Blood clots to their lungs. That finding was also shocking to the researchers who say they have found no reason for the blood clots to occur in this population. I think this is a scary, scary flu.

You would be surprised how many natural remedies medscape cannot prove "scientific efficiency" for. Actually, you probably wouldn't be surprised. As with most things, it's who you ask, and what their motivation is. Elderberry, has been proven time and again, in clinical studies, to kill the virus. It doesn't just come from the mouth of an old herbalist, we hope knows what he is doing. It works, and has worked very well for every single person I have recommended it to. Tossing natural remedies off as something wack jobs do, has been the method most pharmaceutical companies have used for decades, to prevent people from opening their eyes to what is really happening. Educate yourselves, compare both sides, and make the right decision based on what you experience.

Medscape shows no results for ViraBloc, the alleged active ingredient in Blockade, so it is an herbal remedy without any formal studies to determine efficacy. It's probably harmless, I suppose. Your best bet is to practice sanitation (e.g. frequent hand washing) and get a regular seasonal flu shot. Treatments such as Theraflu or whatnot are just that, treatments -- they don't keep you from getting the virus. They may increase comfort, but probably won't do much to actually shorten the course or severity of illness.

.
crisblue13, the CDC reported on some of these deaths including a list of recorded chronic conditions.
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml...
.
And the WHO says that "people with underlying chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and several others, are more likely to experience severe or lethal infections."

.
Given the newness of this strain there is little certainty regarding such risk factors. Basically, any suboptimal health condition should be assumed to at least slightly elevate one's risk.

It is the same with most other varities of the flu Virus. The very young, the very old, and those with conditions which affect their immune system, such as HIV, cancer, Athsma etc..are more suseptable, because they can't fight it off as well. FYI, There is a fantastic product I use, for me and my children. It's called "Blockade" They sell it at basics. I usually don't "endorse" anything, but it has killed any flu my children or I have had. It's completely natural, no chemicals, made with just elderberry juice or something. Elderberry juice, in concentrated form, can kill many viruses, including many forms of Flu. An important thing to remember is just because "western medicine" cannot find a way to kill a virus, don't mean there aren't many other areas of medicine, that can. I could go into the scientifics of it, but I don't feel like taking up 8 pages worth of commentary. Feel free to look here: http://articles.directorym.com/Benefit_O.... And regardless of what you hear from people who think natural remidies are all talk...in my experience, they work better, and faster than any Antibiotic or other pharmeceutical I have ever used...at least when it comes to this type of thing.
